Motorola DROID software update ESD56 - Keep all discussion here!

One of our connects has informed us that while the current OTA has only gone out to around 10,000 devices, there is already another one waiting in the wings and it’s tentatively scheduled for late January. Could this be for an Android OS 2.1 update? We’ll see…

I don't know how u feel. I've never seen a electronic device update like this. Intensive testing should be completed before the update is released to anybody. If it is released, it should be available to every single owner. It is unfair to improve/brick certain phones, leaving others wondering and waiting.

p.s. I hate to wait as much as let someone else make a decision for me.

I've had Android updates on other phones and carriers since Version 1.0 and every update has been rolled out in this way. Makes perfect sense too...
Look at at from the carrier/manufacturers point of view of looking at 700,000+ devices and not as the owner of one and you might see the wisdom in it...
Just another 1-4 days and you'll be updated (unless the first 10,000 are falling apart...)

I have the update zip file...just downloaded it...need to check it out.

Warning this site is apparently using an untrusted certificate. Firefox made me create an exception in order to download the file.

nope, I think it runs faster actually, no waiting on downloads (before sometimes it would say waiting for download for a minute then start)

Not an untrusted cert. If you look at the cert, you'll see it's for *.google.com. Unfortunately, SSL is really strict, so the * only goes back one level. clients.google.com - this cert works. android.clients.google.com, it doesn't.

The cert is valid.

Their instructions say this:

• Rename the downloaded file update.zip and put it in the root directory of the SD card (NOTE: EDIT: Some people over at AllDroid are saying that they have to rename the file to update, not update.zip. Be aware.)
• Power off the device
• Open the keyboard and press and hold the X key, then turn the device on, while still holding the X key
• Continue holding the X key until you get a screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle and a phone lying next to it.
• Release the X key, then press Volume Up and Camera simultaneously.
• Turn the screen vertical, choose the option that allows you to apply an update from the appropriate file.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking about it. "Voles" is Google's name for the DROID and it is an official Google site that it's downloaded from.

That is from the google.com domain, they just dont have a security certificate setup correctly for that particular subdomain, is all. Where did you "find" that link?

Manually applying the update worked perfectly for me, and I am now running 2.0.1 :-) *excited.

It is update.zip that you rename it to btw.

If you see the ".zip" in the filename then rename it to "update.zip". If you do not see the ".zip" in the filename, then rename it "update".

It is just that some people have the extension of known filetypes hidden. That is the Windows default, which is one of my pet peeves - it causes people to not understand extensions

Too late, I'm already updated

Mine still seems sluggish, maybe a lil usuage will speed things up. The camera def. moves on quicker though.
