Two separate vzw reps have said I live in a "pocket" where verizon wireless does not have a "roaming agreement" so they could not port my number. In both cases I think I was the first person with a number that they couldn't port. In one case I spoke to the supervisor who couldn't explain who controls these roaming agreements either.
I get full signal for vzw voice and 3G at my home.
The land line is through fairpoint but I've spoken to them and they say they aren't holding my number for any reason and would not block a port request if it came through.
I can't figure out what to do next, who can I contact to figure out why I (seemingly alone) have such a special phone number that it cannot be ported? - aren't there fcc laws against that?
Thanks.
Well considering VZW is able to broadcast their service in his area (his post says he has very good coverage with VZW) then I see no reason as to why VZW doesn't have a license in his area.
Keep calling.. or you can take it the long way and port it to pre-paid carrier and then port to VZW. Worth a shot.
thanks!
So does "roaming agreement" = towers in the area? That's what I can't seem to pin down. If so then it should be a non-issue and I just some dept at vzw to take my area off the blackout list, the problem is it's not clear that this roaming agreement is within their control.
I should know better than to go looking for answers in a call *center* the size of verizon's, I just want my number to port. So porting to another carrier and then to vzw is certainly on my radar at this point, any clues on the best way to do that?

What's the area code and exchange of the number your trying to port?
when I try the online "check for portability" things they come back with a text string saying I need to call support (sorry should have mentioned that)
Ah, that's different. "License for service" to me means there aren't enough people (read $) in 353 to make it worth while for vzw. Makes sense and too bad for me but I chose to live there.
Also, mentioning that Lebanon (a nearby urban area for future reference) IS licensed shows that theres a method to the areas that are serviced. I can live with that.
- for the record I've been more than pleased w/vzw at their store and on the phone and this doesn't change my opinion, it just seems a little silly that I couldn't get that info after 3 calls talking with sales, support, tech support, and a supervisor.
Now I can feel comfortable changing references to my land line number everywhere and then dropping it altogether, before it felt like I might be wasting my time.
thanks

Don't listen to this advise...
If you're told the number is not portable, it's due to the number being in a market where the FCC does not allow Verizon to do business to prevent monopoly...
Your phone being able to work there is an entirely separate issue
