You can, but:
1. You have to use a web proxy to browse the web, which is unsecured and inconvenient. I suggest downloading the Opera Mini 6 mod from my portal and running it in MicroEmulator, a J2ME emulator (http://code.google.com/p/microemu/downloads/list).
2. It uses a ton more data over phone browsers (especially Opera Mini), and if we (i.e. the users of this workaround) cut into T-Mobile's data network too much, they'll probably close the loophole for good.
3. It'll be pretty slow (I'm gonna say you'll get around 200 kbps down on a good day over 3G, but I have not tested this)
So yes, it's possible, but only tether if it's necessary and limit yourself to light browsing (no YouTube, Pandora, video chatting, etc.). I'd buy a day pass I were going to tether.

The http://tmobileportal.co.cc site is down.
Thanks for telling me! I'd really appreciate it if my web host would email me when they make major changes that put my website out of service. Oh well, I suppose I shouldn't expect that much from a free host with no ads.
Update: Okay, so it was not my web host. My domain got blocked for some reason. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you need any of the downloads or links from the site, feel free to PM me.
Update 2: The portal can be accessed at http://tmobile1.co.cc/home.html (the home.html is important!) for the time being. If co.cc does not resolve the domain block, I will move the portal over to this URL permanently.

About a year or more ago, I downloaded the operamini from capsmokey's website and was able to browse the internet for free until about 3 days ago. Is there anything else like that where I can download it and then again browse for free? Tx...
It should! It worked on my G1.
Go on my portal at http://tmobile1.co.cc/.
Update: I'm setting up my portal again at http://www.tmobileportal.tk. It should be up in a few hours.
Update: The portal's up at http://www.tmobileportal.tk!

Good news! I just switched web hosts yesterday to one that would allow me to make a "m.yahoo.com" subdomain. It'll be up at m.yahoo.com.tmobileportal.tk once I get all of the downloads modded with m.yahoo.com.
Note: if you click on it now, you'll just get a 404 page for my old web host. I'll post when it's up.
Update: It's up on http://m.yahoo.com.tmobile1.co.cc for now, but once it's up on tmobileportal.tk, I'll take tmobile1.co.cc down. Unfortunately, the Opera Mini 3 downloads from on the yahoo portal are not connecting. I'm working on it right now.
The m.yahoo.com portal is up at http://m.yahoo.com.tmobileportal.tk!
Opera Mini 3 is fixed.

Alright, I just downloaded Opera 4.3 from your site and am up and running again with free internet on my t-mobile prepaid account that I only pay $10 a year for! Big thanks to you and Capt Smokey for all these services!
I don't even know how this all works or what all the terminologies in this thread like "portal" and "proxy" means. I just downloaded the opera browsers from captsmokey's and now your website. Is there any thread or explanation about all this so I can learn just what is going on?
A portal is a web site that acts as a launching point to the rest of the internet, like Yahoo (and Google to a lesser extent).
A proxy is a server that runs web traffic through it. Usually, they're used for anonymous browsing or to bypass firewalls, but in this case, a proxy allows you to browse the internet for free on T-Mobile prepaid. Opera Mini works by running all web traffic through a special proxy (hosted by Opera) that compresses and formats web pages for phones so they load faster and are easier to navigate on phones.
How this free browsing works is that any URL with the string "tmobile" or "t-mobile" in it is allowed on T-Mobile prepaid. The Opera Mini downloads are modified to include "tmobile" in their proxy URL.
Ugh, just switched from my Nexus One to an iPhone 4 and I couldn't get this working in OM6 either. There's no server field, and it's ignored if I add it in. I had to install an IPA for OM 5.0.2. Is there a newer one that supports the Retina display? It really looks awful, makes my eyes feel like they're going fuzzy.

I'm trying to go to your portal with my Motorola W233 without success. It opens the OpenWave Browser, but it just chugs along and never leaves the opening page. If I wait long enough, it says "Network Error". Any ideas?
EDIT:
Never mind, got it working. The Web Settings were checked on MMS instead of T-Zones. This is very cool. Only have 1 minute left on prepaid account and still able to surf!

My portal's down for right now. My web host is having some data issues right now.
I have a Samsung Highlight so can it get free internet? I do not have no data plan on it.
