I think the key part of that conversation is that HE DOESN'T KNOW. From everything I've seen, it's more than just a ROM upgrade.
As for time from FCC to retail, there's no pattern that I've seen. The big holdup with most phones is that they need to be approved by the carriers. No telling how long that takes.
Look at the TP2 for example. AT&T has had it for a while now. Tmobile still hasn't posted the upgrade.
No, he didn't say that its just a ROM upgrade for 3G, just the ROM to update to what the US version will be as far as software.
The European HD2 won't do 3G here. The Euro version of the phone uses the European 2100Mhz spectrum for 3g, while T-Mobile USA uses the American 2100Mhz spectrum. Even though they're both labeled as 2100Mhz they aren't the same. It's a paired spectrum so they use one frequency for upload and one for download. The only frequency they have in common is 2100Mhz for download (hence the name). The US and Euro versions use different upload frequencies so they aren't compatible. I have a Euro HTC Touch Diamond on T-Mo right now, which uses the same frequencies as the HD2, and I don't get any 3G signal. It sucks but its what we gotta deal with for now.
As he said on the phone, they are testing this in the Philly area, not the whole entire US. As well as I know the 3G won't work here in NC, which is why I was calling to find out some info. But with there not being 3G around my area until you go 5-10 miles north or south, I am not missing nothing anyway. But he did say that they are working to bring it to the US, which is why the test in Philly.

What he told you is wrong. T-Mobile is testing HSPA+ in Philly, as shown here:
It's a higher speed 3G than what is offered now but is not a different frequency, which is what's needed for a Euro handset to work here. Spectrum is provisioned by the FCC and as of right now the only spectrum T-Mobile is allowed to use for 3G is the American 2100Mhz pair, which is 2100Mhz for download and 1700Mhz for upload.
As I said before, personally I could care less about the 3G stuff since I don't have it in my area anyway. As I was stating before, the software can be updated here once the US version comes out, right? Thats the main thing I want to know is if the ROM can be updated to whatever we get here. Debating on holding off til ours comes here, or getting the import. Wonder how much this will be so I can sorta see how much more I am going to pay for a import.

That's the issue, it can't be fixed with a software update. Compatibility is determined by hardware. If you got an import version it would work here on EDGE but it would never work on 3G, ever. I'm not trying to take the wind out of your sails here, I've been lusting after this phone for months and want it ASAP but the reality is that it's worth the wait for 1) 3G compatibility here and 2) most likely a huge drop in price. Right now it's about $800 on eBay, $1,000 at J&R. I can't see it being more than $600 outright when it lands here but only time will tell.

Yep, you are the same as me on the phone. I want it BAD! One hand says wait, the other says get it.
If you didn't have 3G coverage in your area, would you go ahead and get it? I am trying to find the good out of this. I actually have to be travelling somewhere in order to get 3G. Here in my part where I live, we don't have it.

Tough call...where do you live? T-Mobile is doing 3G rollouts fairly consistently so you may have it coming to your area sometime in the next year. Otherwise if you're only going to be using it on EDGE there won't be a difference between the two models. I'd say wait it out for another two weeks to see if we get some idea on a release date. Looks like the rumors say somewhere between January and March. Let's hope sooner rather than later
You know what I just thought of, the T-Mobile branded phone may have UMA wifi calling, which is awesome. Pretty good reason to hold out for the US model

DAMN...you just have to bring up something else don't ya? LOL! I am located in Lexington, NC. Called TMO today and asked about the 3G for this area. They have no idea. But figure that we should get it sometime. Its all around us, just not here. Then she tried to tell me, that I wouldn't notice a big difference between EDGE and 3G, that its mainly a marketing ploy. I was like, yeah ok. Marketing ploy...right. Talk about lawsuits galore if thats the case. LOL! I guess I will hold out for a little while longer and see. Its not like these phones are going away on Ebay. So...I will hold down a lil bit and see. Hard to do...but I will. If you hear anything, post it on here. Have a good Christmas!

Where's this news coming from? From what I understand they're just changing the name from UMA to WiFi calling and making some changes to the @home service.

Haha...there's always something else! T-Mobile's deployment schedule would be really handy right now huh? You're right in the middle of two huge 3g areas so I would think that it's coming soon but thats purely speculation. Did she really say that?? Hilarious. I agree, let's keep this thread as up to date as possible! Merry Christmas to you too!

Yep, she most certainly said it. Said she had 2 devices that she used, one is 3G the other is EDGE only, and said they both load about the same. Can hardly tell any difference. But I did see one of the reviews, forgot which site its on, said with the snapdragon processor it helps with the speed of not having the 3G on this. Which by how it showed, it showed it loading pretty quick, so again here is something else. LOL! And yes, I am right between 2 huge 3G areas, which is what I was thinking it would be coming sometime. But when is the question.

WiFi calling is no longer available to add on, it is already grandfathered, no more new UMA (wi-fi calling) devices!
