I charged my s55 and sl55 for 3-5 hours when I first got them... it's not an old school type battery that needs 8-12 hours of initial charging the first time around. I would definately do atleast 5 full charges and drains though.

I charge mine when it's off--- I just pop my sim card into one of my other fones when I charge mine. You can charge it with it on though you won't damage your fone.

on my old moto P7689, i usually charge it when its still on
and i charge it at night when i go to the bed.. and unplug it when i wake up in the morning.. so its charged for 6-7 hours long..
i noticed that the battery life is not that great compares with my friend's P7689 (she turns it off), i wonder if this will happen to SL55 too..

Remember - Battery life is based on charge-discharge cycles. Even if you battery is of a type that does not suffer from "memory effect", charging the battery every night if it is not needed will wear the battery down faster.

On the other hand remember that most batteries have a rated cycle life of 400-500 cycles.

Some types of batterys can be assisted by letting the phone total discharge (go until it turns itself off). Then let it charge fully.

A note about charging while on - I find this is better for conditioning the battery UNLESS the phone is being used for calls or shows signs of being warm. A warm battery is not a happy battery.

    Note:
Non if this information is based on science, just experience and observation. Your mileage may vary.

Each time you start a charge - that is a cycle.

Depending on your battery technology (and charger), charging for 6-7 hours is not a problem.

It doesn't hurt your battery unless it is hot. (I would avoice charging a battery while under sunlight or in a 100+ room).

As far as hurting battery life - well if you charge it when you don't need to then you are wasting a cycle.

If your typical day (morning to morning - not morning to night) consumes less than 40% of your batery then you might be charging more than you need too.

Of course you might be better off just figuring on a new batery everyone 14-18months of every-day charging. Batteries are no longer $$$$$ just $$.
