Buying used data cards and activate them for prepaid mobile broadband

...I don't know if this question belongs here under VZW or the prepaid VZW section, but it seems like it might be more appropriate here, so here goes:

If I were to buy a used data card from craigslist and it had a clean ESN, how do I go about activating it and setting it up for prepaid mobile broadband? I am talking about the 500MB/month for $50 plan. Is it like Virgin Mobile's prepaid broadband plan where you don't need to pay for it if you don't need it for the month?

The directions on the VZW site only say to purchase sessions on Connection Manager, but have no instructions on whether a device needs to be activated beforehand or if a second-hand device can be used at all.

Thanks in advance for the help.
    I like prepaid services...methinks.

As long as the device has a clean esn then you should be fine. Make sure it is a rev-a card so you take advantage of higher speeds. Its also my understanding that you have to pay 50$ every month.

Verizon actually has pay as you go broadband plans now. They start at $15 for 75MB (1 day). Best Buy also is selling a pay as you go broadband USB data stick for $120.
