Unhappy What I don't like about my ERIS

Notifications don't go away unless you clear them. When I click one to read a text, it should automatically go away, right? WRONG. I have found no other way to do this. The messaging interface is CRAP. I can barely tell who I have a new message from. It's supposed to be customizable? The eris sucks! I had a droid and the eris, and they both don't fit my standards. I'm now stuck with this phone. Does anyone know if this is going to be updated, to what? And when? I can't stand the notifications, but how else am I going to find out if I have a text message? I already have to search for them. The widgets are slow. Just plain slow. They barely refresh which makes them useless to me. It looks sloppy to me. I don't like this phone, but can't switch out. I know this message is sloppy but that's what my life seems to be like with this phone. I need a smartphone for everything I do and Verizon is so limited. Any advice?

Honestly I'd go intot he store, explain to the manager that you're really unhappy with the phone and ask very nicely if they can help you find something that will better fit your needs.

You never know until you ask (well, as long as you're within the 30 days)

Are you still within your 30 days of original purchase?

As for texting, shut off notifications in the stock app and try something like Handcent, it's got much more customizable notification options and it can do pop ups when you get new messages so you don't have to open the messaging app to see them.

What needs don't these phones fit for you? You may just need to customize them to your liking...

I second mjones73...try using Handcent SMS instead of the stock messaging app. You can download it from the Market. Make sure to turn the notifications off in the stock messaging app, and then spend time playing around with the settings in Handcent to customize it however you like. The pop-up feature is very nice.

The "official" word so far is that the Eris will be updated to Android 2.x in the first quarter of next year. Even though the rumors we have on the forums aren't official, many of us believe we will be getting 2.1, likely around the end of January.

Which widgets are you referring to? I know the HTC Weather widget has had problems updating in the past, but the January 22 update is supposed to resolve this. (info taken from here)

I know there are multiple versions of most of the HTC widgets (there are 12 different clocks!), and there are many other widgets available on the Market. There are even "homescreen replacement" apps, such as aHome, that support different themes. I'm sure you can find something that suits your taste.

I'd hate for you to be stuck with a phone you don't like, and I hope this info helps you customize the phone to better fit your needs. Let us know if you have any other questions.

What did you not like about the Motorola DROID? What phone out there, will "fit" your needs? The Moto DROID is superior to the iphone IMO. The way I see it, you have four options for a SMART phone, Android, WinMo, Apple or Blackberry. Guess you should have done a better job on your homework and played around more with phone in the store before you pulled the plug, not just once (Moto DROID), but twice (Eris).

Some people will never be happy with whatever they get and there is NO perfect phone.

i agree with tsturbo...shoulda done the homework...wireless companies are starting to be very anal about things and probbaly wont do anything for you...if you really don't like it just post it on craiglist or something and highball it...probably pay for the cancellation fee and a new phone...did it with my tour...and i got a droid...perfect phone...always complained about how i should have gotten the iphone...never had that thought enter my head after i got the drizzoid..booyah

what i don't like about my Eris is how it doesn't like to respond to my touch about 90% of the time. at least not on the first try. i am assuming it's because of the overworked processor and resulting lag.

You people and your lag just crack me up. GET OVER IT!

Do you not realize what a technological marvel you are holding? 15 years ago we had pagers. You got a beep with a phone number.

lol, very true. and trust me, especially coming from a plain old nokia, the Eris is incredible. but i find myself constantly pressing the screen over and over, especially the home, clear and menu buttons with no response from the phone. even though i try and maintain some perspective it's still very frustrating when you press something and expect a reaction and don't get it over and over again. maybe coming from the Droid that i had for a week made me spoiled. it would be the same if the phone had physical buttons that just didn't respond immediately but only after pressing several times. that would be maddening. i love what the phone can do but it does seem a bit taxed.

If you hated the DROID why would you go to the DROID Eris? It's still Android, just with a pretty HTC skin.

And I didn't even get a phone with a color screen (let alone a screen that could handle graphics) until I got the LG VX6000 back in 2004.

    Overworked processor? LOL.

Mine works perfect. I touch, it does it's thing. No lag. Have you done the touch calibration or whatever it's called?

That's not normal behavior... You may just have a bad phone...

Does the Eris have calibration, I know the Droid doesn't.

If it didn't respond to your touch 90% of the time, it would be, quite literally, unusable. Considering you're still using it, I'd say that's a bit of an exaggeration. That said, if you are having serious touch response issues, that's most likely an acceptable reason for an exchange.
A slice of bread will always land peanut butter side down. If, by chance, you put peanut butter on both sides of the slice, it will float forever.
