    txt msg delays last night?

Just wondering if anybody else noticed problems/delays last night (new years eve) on the fido network?

I was downtown Toronto in the Entertainment district, I was sending somebody on the rogers network txt msgs around 11pm and she got a few of those right away but other ones she got at 4am.

I realize it was new years eve & high load and such but was just wondering if anybody knew why exactly?

I had problem sending texts about midnight as well. It took forever to finish sending a mass text. I think you had already answered your own question... Too many people are texting making the network very busy.

    Extremely heavy network load.

Makes you wonder what would happen in the event of a major disaster (natural, terrorist, etc.) how useful cell phones would actually be!

Cell/Mobile phones are great, but, the system will "stagger" and may collapse, if the load is heavy enough. That, along with other reasons, is why local amateur radio groups maintain equipment and a list of volunteers, who are willing to stand-to and operate an emergency comm. net

Or school shootings and stuff, students and parents trying to use their phones all at once to make sure everyone is ok can bring down a network. I remember when I did my lockdown drills in highschool they implemented a rule that all cell phones had to be put on a desk so no one could use them and impede emergency response and stuff.
Another insightful and thought provoking post...

Txts were going through on 3G, but delayed alot. I just flipped my phone over to 2G (GSM) and my txts went through without a hitch.

I got the original 2G Iphone which I was using, the txt msgs would go through without an issue but to the person i was sending them to were really delayed. & if it was a longer msg where it would be broken up in 2 diff txts 1 half would arrive and the other not or hours later.

my mass text and bbm's in vancity went through just fine.

it was just prob the sheer volume of msgs going that slowed everyone else down.

I wonder how many texts were sent over the Fido/Rogers network last night? I didn't even bother trying to send any as they always arrive late on New Years
