    I-mode and japanese keitai

    Hello there,

First sorry for my english !

    --

Well that's not an other topic about "wtf i can't go on internet with my phone" but some research i've done on it. I'm not graduate from IT so i've research every things that i didn't understand by myself (so maybe i've mistaken some stuff).

So for my research i've used 2 sims card and a NTT Docomo N-08A software unlocked.

The first sim card (french operator) :

SFR (No i-mode service at all (so wap).
    Bouygues Telecom (I-mode service activate).

From the phone, whatever setting it doesn't works so i've done some other research on why.

    1. Using my phone (dial up modem) on my PC like a Wap/i-mode mobile :

For this i'm using the "user agent switcher", Firefox and the gprs proxy for SFR/bouygues. I've also done some stuff with hyperterminal (Added wapsfr, i-mode.fr and internet APN).
I'm using Every N-08A user agents and the N500i (i-mode occidental mobile where WML (wap) and ihtml (I-mode (from chtml)) is supported) user agent : portalmmm/2.0 N500i(c20;TB) )

    SFR result :
If i use the N-08A or N500i user agents, SFR proxy is ok, no error but if i use the standard user agent (Firefox one) then Blank page.

    Bouygues result :

Using the N500i user agent : ok no problem
Using the N-08A user agent or Firefox User agent : a message (in french but translated here) "Your phone doesn't have the right to access this service" error 403 access forbidden
In fact, if i use any user agent EXCEPT occidental i-mode phone i have this message.

    First conclusion :

The Bouygues proxy do a check on the user agent where the SFR one doesn't.

    2 Some other stuffs :

    - About APN for I-mode : after some testing it seems that an i-mode compatible sim can connect to ANY I-mode APN : i've tested with mopera.ne.jp/.net (NTT docomo) , Imode.fr (Bouygues), Internet (COSMOTE) and everything is okay.

    - PLMN : i've read many times "A japanese keitai can't access to internet because you can't enter the proxy setting" but... it's untrue because we use the PLMN setting from the operator and in this PLMN, the proxy is included...

    3. Some thinking about keitai's behaviour when you try to connect :

With SFR (APN/host number : wapsfr)

    - Keitai is connecting (yellow I blinking)
    - white screen
    - "Connection interrupted".

    Analyse :

    - the phone can connect thanks to the APN and the PLMN setting.
    - the phone can't understand the data recieved (SFR proxy is a WAP proxy so WML is send but the N-08A can only understand chtml and xhtml). So we get a white screen.
    - Since the phone can't read the data, it doesn't answer to the server and we are getting a "timeout".

With Bouygues (APN : default keitai config, imode.fr, internet or any i-mode APN) :

    - Keitai is connecting (yellow I blinking)
    - Keitai browser is automaticly closed (sometime we just got a "x" page but it happen rarely).

    Anayse :

    - Keitai try to connect to the APN thanks to the PLMN setting but the bouygues Proxy send a 403 error : access forbidden.
    - Since it got the 403 error, he close.

and that's the end of my testing.

The big question mark is "what's going to happen if you hack the user agent of the keitai by a autorised one ?" (like the n500i).

Since i'm not able to hack at all, i wanted to know if someone here is able to do this ?

very interesting old thread. but after seeing the response (or maybe I do not see any ..),, makes me think if most users here is consumers minded. threads popping up every day asking how and what to do to make it work. but to engage more deeply to find any possibility; that a different thing.
