How much longer will Alltel phones work with Verizon?

I was just told by a Verizon rep that Verizon planned to only continue support for Alltel equipment for another year at which time everyone would be required to upgrade to a Verizon phone as the Alltel phones would no longer work.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? I've had to get too many replacement phones over the past few years and don't really want to have to get another one. I currently have a htc 6800 and it's been working fine for me. I know people who are having problems with a Verizon phone and I can't say I've had ever had problems like they are.

I just purchased a eMachines Netbook with Windows 7 from WalMart for $220 and use it with the Alltel UM175.

Does anyone have any idea what Verizon would do to make Alltel phones no longer work and when? I'm really not impressed with the reps in this store, they all seem rude and stupid.

The Verizon rep was lying and trying to make a sale. My AlltelU account was converted to a Verizon Prepaid account with the same 15 cent per minute rate. Some folks with Alltel postpaid have not been treated well by Verizon and others have not had problems. I would suggest picking up a couple of used Alltel phones-like your HTC 6800 to use for ESN changes when your current 6800 dies. Most Alltel users hate the Verzon User Interface with a passion. Having a replacement Alltel phone allows you to avoid the ugly interface.
From all the the documents I received from Verizon about changes due to the Alltel merger you will be able to use your Alltel phone for some time to come. If you talk to Customer Service you might get straighter information than from a retail store rep.

    Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.14912/1280; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

    Its nonsense. Don't worry.

I know Alltel and Verizon phones use a different SID but I didn't think that made much of a difference with the merger. I was a bit confused by how Alltel phones would just stop working. The only thing I could see is if they made a move from CDMA -- I know they are working on 4G but I've been to areas that don't have EVDO yet.

I'm really not sure I understand, but I see lots of people go into the Verizon store for help with an Alltel phone and come back out with a new Verizon phone. So far my Alltel phone works just fine and anyplace my friend's Verizon phone works.

While a Droid might be nice, I just can't see myself spending $200 on a phone then signing a new 2-year contract. I have a back up htc 6800 that I got from a friend who used it for 2 months then broke his contract to go to a different company.

Stupid me went into the local Verizon store looking for a replacement battery. BIG MISTAKE! They looked up my account then they told me they couldn't get me a battery because it was an Alltel phone and since it was out of contract, I needed to get a new Verizon phone. I told him I didn't need a new phone and that's when the guy told my Verizon would be shutting off service to Alltel branded phones within the year and I would be crawling back in a few months to get a new phone, but I wouldn't be able to get the good deals they have now. Then he wants to replace my Alltel aircard with a NetBook with a built-in aircard.

Go to ebay for your battery. Verizon stores are telling this to all former alltel customers. My daughter included. I told her it was BS and do not listen to them

Yeah, it's BS alright. You can't believe most of what they tell you at the stores. They are just trying to make a sale and get you on contract.
