Definitive list: smartphones that do/do not require data plans

As most of you know, smartphones launched on or after November 14, 2008 require a data plan. There are no exceptions to this rule whether it be you purchased a newer phone at full retail or purchased the phone through ebay/craigslist.

Below is the definitive list of smartphones that launched prior to November 14, 2008 (please note that I've only gone back as far as 2006 release dates) and those that have been released since (and therefore require a data plan). I've also included if those smartphones that don't require a data plan have wifi or not.

Please note that VZW DOES NOT sell any smartphone launched pre-Nov. 14, 2008 directly anymore.

Smartphones that DO NOT require a data plan (pre-Nov. 14, 2008)
    1) HTC Fusion (SMT5800) - no wifi
    2) HTC Touch (XV6900) - no wifi
    3) Motorola Q9M/Q9C/Q - no wifi
    4) Palm Centro - no wifi
    5) Samsung SCH-i760 - WIFI
    6) HTC Mogul (XV6800) - WIFI
    7) Palm Treo 700w/700wx - no wifi
    8) Pantech PN-820 - no wifi, but one of the few clamshell smartphones available
    9) Palm Treo 700p - no wifi
    10) Palm Treo 750p - no wifi
    11) Samsung SCH-I830 - no wifi
    12) HTC Apache (XV6700) - WIFI
    13) Samsung SCH-I730 - WIFI
    14) Palm Treo 650 - no wifi
    15) HTC Harrier (XV6600) - no wifi

Smartphones that DO require a data plan (post-Nov. 14, 2008)
    1) All Blackberry phones
    2) HTC Touch Pro
    3) Samsung Saga
    4) Samsung Omnia
    5) HTC Touch Diamond
    6) HTC Ozone
    7) HTC Touch Pro 2
    8) HTC Imagio
    9) HTC Droid Eris
    10) Motorola Droid
    11) Samsung Omnia II

Please let me know if I've missed any.

    Thanks!

shouldn't the q9's be noted that they so support wifi, you just have to add it.

That's not a built-in feature of the phone, but you can of course post in this thread a detailed explanation as to how you might accomplish this.

That's 100% not true. You may not have been able to activate through the website without a data plan, but that's been an ongoing problem. You have to call in and speak with a rep that actually knows verizon's own policys. The Centro and 700wx continue to not require data plans.

Not much detail needed, you just plug in a wifi card (Spectec miniSD ~$25)

I have the Connect Plan which is no longer offered. Basically it's unlimited data and text for both lines on our family plan. Would Verizon allow one of these older smart phones that don't require the $30 data plan on the Connect plan?
