Will My Blackberry Plan Work With the iPhone?

    Hi,

I want to switch phones from a Bold 9700 to an iPhone. I am currently on a really good Fab 10 Student Blackberry 50 plan with unlimited data and I was wondering if this plan would work on an iPhone. This could be an unlocked iPhone or bought straight from Bell.

When I first signed this deal with Bell, they told me that I could switch to the iPhone at any time and keep my plan, but when I spoke to them today they said it probably wouldn't work... all they did was offer me a fab 5 plan with only 500 mb, and for about the same price as I'm currently paying!

So, will my Blackberry plan work with an iPhone?

I believe Bell makes you switch plans based on device.

I had a BB Curve with $30 unlimited data and switched to a Galaxy (bought it outright), and have not been charged any data. Online, it doesn't list my phone type, just my sim card. I would assume that it would be the same for an iphone, IF you don't buy it under contract.

The only plan I heard not working on an iphone is the unlimited data plans which include the blackberry versions as well. If you have a regular smartphone data plan it should work in both phones.

Everyone on this forum used to say that it doesn't work like that!

If I recall correctly Blackberry Data =/= Smartphone Data

Don't quote me, but I think you need to change data plans but your base plan is fine

If this is anything like Rogers and I suspect it is.

You can use a BB plan on any smartphone.
You cannot use a smartphone plan on a BB.

The reason is that all of the BB data goes through RIM's servers and is compressed, without the special BB plan it cannot communicate with RIM.

Yeah from what I've heard also is that if you have a BB Data plan you can use any other device too, but if you don't have a BB data plan you can use other phones but not BB.

In other words you want the BB Data plan cause it will work with all the phones including BBs.

So, even if it's on an iPhone it will be going through RIM's servers? Would that make the iPhone speeds significantly slower than they could be? I've been wondering that just for all Blackberries as well... it seems like their really slow compared to other 3G phones.

Well I really hope you guys are right but from the info everyone on here has been giving since launch (including people on here that work for Bell) have been saying that you need to switch data plans. It does not work like Rogers where you can get the BB code added to your existing data plan.

Like I said, I hope you guys are right because that would make things so much easier with much less hassle, which isn't typical of the Bell way of dealing with things lol.

THINK LENOVO: No the iPhone won't go through RIM servers. And I don't know which Blackberry you are using, but mine is always running superfast, even when compared to an iPhone 3G.

JDUBBS: I can see why your are confused. The word's always been that the plan will need to be changed, but seems like Bell is overlooking it for now. So they aren't charging people who are using other devices including the iPhone. At least they aren't charging some of the people on here who have commented.

but if it is an unlocked phone then bell wont see what phone it is? so really they wouldn't know. The question really is if the data will work from smart phone to blackberry or blackberry to smart phone...

Bell could use IMEI filtering to determine what phone is connected to the network, like Rogers does for unlimited mobile browser.
