    VoIP

So now that apple has finally allowed iPhone SDK to allow VoIP, will we be able to use Skype over 3G without jailbreaking? Or is Canada gonna get the shaft?

Even if it can be used without carrier being carrier enabled, Rogers and Fido (not sure about Belus) prohibit VOIP over 3G, so you might be liable for penalties if you used it. Not that there aren't people doing it through jailbreaks right now, but it still would still be a violation. In the US, AT&T publicly said they would allow it.
    Carrier unlocked iPhone 4

Actually, no, I can't find one. I am fairly certain I read it, but perhaps it was my imagination.

what a great way for Rogers to have 'please call rogers to activate Voip over 3G' messages (just like in the tethering feature), and then charge us $5 a month to use it!

    lets cross our fingers
    My Plans x2 (Fido): $50 Unlim wCanUS-LDandSMS/$30 6gig/$10 callID/vm (-$10credits.each) = $80+tax

    I was wrong

Seems as though they do allow it. If the Mary Pretotto that posted at iPhoneInCanada.ca really is the one that works for Rogers as a communications manager, she had this to say a few months ago.
Hi Everyone. This is Mary with Rogers. Sorry for the delay in response, I had mistakenly posted to a different thread.
So just to clarify, Rogers/Fido customers can already make calls over wifi using the Skype app that is available in Canada. We can't comment on Skype over a wireless network as the app available in Canada does not currently enable. But Rogers/Fido customers can use other VOIP applications that operate over the network today.
    iPhoneInCanada .

This article from June '09, discussing a Rogers industry presentation also seems to convey that Rogers does allow VOIP over the cellular network...at least the author thinks so.

so, good news for when skype updates....I see fring also now allows you to make VOIP Skype calls over 3G and iCall did the first day, so Skype should be soon.

Never saw a VOIP restriction in my rogers contract, but there was one on my telus contract.

I have never heard of such, Fido or Rogers. You need to back it up with something.

I've looked over the relevant Fido information that I could find and also never saw a prohibition on VOIP. I have read Bell's and Telus' info and did see it there. Fido (and presumably Rogers) is on the right side of the issue on this one.

Which is why I said 'keep reading'. In the forth post in this thread I said I could no longer find the TOS clause for this and that I might have been mistaken. In the eighth post I reverenced two separate links that show that Rogers does allow third party VOIP on their wireless network.

Does no one read past the 2nd post in a thread?
