There's a new tower tab at the bottom that tells you . . . . . when they were added.
Those dates are only approximate, to put it mildly.
For example, it shows OSC1315 Grimsby 1 Slessor Blvd TAFL Dec. 1
However, that site has been there, even officially, for many months before December 1

    The cell tower map at

    http://www.loxcel.com/celltower

has REMOVED microwave sites for both January and February 2012.

I will be following up shortly with a special microwave tower map for Wind for Oct 2011 - Feb 2012.

Here are the updated counts for Jan, Feb 2012:

    Rogers : 112386, 115314
    Bell : 38012, 37850
    Telus : 37316, 37756
    SaskTel : 4130, 4130
    MTS : 1976, 1976
    TbayTel : 480, 480
    Globalive : 5736, 6142
    Videotron : 6576, 5736
    Mobilicity : 2348, 2360
    PublicMobile : 2210, 2210
    Other : 328, 328
    Total Antenna=211498, 214282
    Total Towers: 15405, 15613

Also please note that the upper-left corner of the map now reports the total # towers on the map. (This count includes any markers "just outside" the map edge.)

Any questions, please reach me via the email below.

    Thank you

I'd like your thoughts on a big change I might make to the loxcel cell tower map:

Is a map of 15,613 towers an accurate depiction of "cellular infrastructure?"

Or is "cellular infrastructure" better represented by a map of 214,282 antennas?

(All stats are for Feb 2012)

Right now, the Loxcel map (and all others, as far as I know) show towers, not antennas.

Antennas actually receive and broadcast cell transmissions, which is important. Antennas do the "heavy work." Towers are passive devices that represent a grouping of antennas.

Consider a scenario with two carriers in a small city:

Carrier #1 has 10 towers with 20 antennas each, for a total of 200 antennas

Carrier #2 has 50 towers with 3 antennas each, for a total of 150 antennas.

A map of towers would show carrier #2 as having "more infrastructure" because it has more towers, although carrier #1 has more antennas and possibly better coverage.

What do you think? Should the map show antennas or towers?

All comments / ideas / refinements welcome.

Neat map. I like the chronological account of new towers.

The credit goes to bprintz! ( I think) It is truly a great map! Loxcel could look into adding this... requiring automatic updates...

Hey guys I noticed a new cell site in Winnipeg today by the Downs/Red River Ex grounds. It is a bit west of the perimiter, and it is not listed in any map I've seen. I'm thinking it's WIND. The SBA maps website doesn't list it.

Also frequently referred to as "Positive Rate".

Putting up one additional tower is much more capital intensive (leasing of land) than putting up an extra antenna. It is likely anyone building a network would maximize use of existing towers by putting on the optimal amounts of antennas on each one.

A educated guess would be that additional antennas service more people in a given area, but doesn't really expand coverage that much.

Stick with towers. Don't jump the gun and make the same mistake as putting MW sites on the map.

The problem with that is we know all the new locations of antennas/towers far before they're posted there. And they don't get posted there until they've been active for weeks. So it's nice, but it's "old".

That being said, the SD/TAFL sources can list towers months before they get turned on, so we have problems there too.

We also have verified coverage in areas that don't show any towers in SD, and aren't even listed as "coming soon" on WIND.

So it looks like they're slowly filling in the gap between Barrie and Toronto.

That's great! Hope London - Toronto is next, as well as 401 - Hamilton.

Either Wind put up or is planning to put a BUNCH of new towers according to bprintz New Towers map. (Unless they are duplicates)
