Why is everyone worried about what SaskTel is offering at launch? Go buy an unlocked phone. It's the whole point of GSM/UMTS.

A friend has had a Telus Milestone phone (Android) for a few months already. They're easy to unlock. He's using it on Rogers today and he can use it on SaskTel in August if he wishes. I have an unlocked Symbian-based Nokian E63 that I got from tigerdirect.ca for hardly anything on which I can do the same.

I still have a year to go on Rogers but I intend to buy an unlocked iPhone 4 (to replace my locked iPhone 3G) and then, if I wish, I can switch to Telus or SaskTel, or stay put with Rogers, as I wish.

The only downside is that you don't get a subsidy, but you also don't have to lock yourself into a contract.
GSM: SaskTel Canada (postpaid voice + data), Rogers Canada (postpaid data), T-Mobile US, AT&T US, Red Pocket Mobile US, Orange UK, 3 UK, Swisscom Mobile Switzerland, tele.ring Austria, airBalticcard (Estonia)

    CDMA: PagePlus US

    GSM phones: iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, Nokia Nuron (AWS 3G), Otech F1 (quad-SIM 2G GSM), Nokia E63, Sony-Ericsson K610i, Sony-Ericsson Z310i. All unlocked.

"...we're looking at the entire unlocked phone issue. Nothing to announce yet though."

I talked to Mobility today and they stated we are getting the iPhone...the question is when. It might not be available at launch (Aug.16th) but could be shortly after.

Incase this hasn't been answered, this is the PLMN that Bell, Telus and SaskTel devices will use if your device doesn't support MOCN. If your device supports MOCN, you'll see the regular PLMN of 302610, 302220, and 302780 respectively.

I guess you could say that. Tester, Implementation, Operation.

Cool. So all devices will see both codes (once the network is operating correctly)... but devices will "connect" to one or the other depending on whether they support MOCN?

I saw both SIDs on my Rogers iPhone 3G - not sure if that device supports MOCN or not.

Well, August 1st has arrived, T-minus 15 days till the SaskTel network launch. I continue to limp along with the Motorola RAZR. What are peoples thoughts on launch day? Are the SaskTel stores going to be crazy busy that day? Or will it come and go with no hoopla? A lot of that will depend on the availability of the iPhone I think. Who knows though?

I was talking to a JUMP.CA salesperson guy in the Circle Centre mall and from the sounds of it, the only new devices at launch so far as he knew will be the Blackberry Bold and a new updated Blackberry Pearl Flip phone. No iPhone right away, no android devices and perhaps only a few other basic phones meant to work with the 3G+ network. He might have been wrong on the iPhone because I could see Sasktel being very tight lipped on that but as I'm completely uninterested in the iPhone and focused instead on android devices, I don't really care either way.

If this is all true though, the new network launch will be a flop in my eyes because he also mentioned that Sasktel won't be allowing unlocked devices on their network in the near future either so it`s not like I can just buy an android device off the web and activate it on Sasktel's network apparently either.

I've asked this before, and not sure anyone will have the answer, but, if SaskTel does not have the iPhone 4 at launch - would Telus be able to offer it to SK residents? Will the Telus kiosk in the Cornwall (for example) have iPhones on the 16th?

FutureShop had only a couple of iPhone4's at launch. Very limited supply.

MOCN devices will see both. It is possible to see both right now in Downtown Regina on a non-MOCN phone.
