Good question. I thought Apple pushed for changes (to GAAP) in how they must account for the sale of certain products. I'm not sure whether that affects how they will charge for firmware upgrades on non-subscription-based devices like iPod touch and iPad in the future, but it might.

Either way, the firmware upgrades for iPod touch have only carried a nominal charge of $10 or $15 in the past, so I doubt it's an important factor for most potential buyers.
Apple lobbied heavily for the change to the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), citing the rules as the reason it must charge some customers nominal fees for upgrades to products like the iPod touch and Airport Extreme. In August, Apple wrote to FASB Chairman Russell Golden in support of the rule change, noting that the then-current requirements did not accurately reflect the real economics of transactions.

Apple explicitly stated they will not charge for OS 4.0 upgrades for the iPad.

ANY product for that matter. Let the manufacturer work all the kinks out, and by the next revision you're good to go.
