Using My Touch 3G in Thailand

Does anybody have suggestions for using my 3G in Thailand? Would a prepaid GPRS data sim card that we buy in Thailand work? Is the phone compatable in Thailand? Does the 3G use GPRS data?

"3G" as in 3G data? Do you know the rates for data roaming? As for prepaid offerings, you should probably check the prepaid GSM website.

The T-Mobile website lists the "My Touch 3G" as being quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G (UMTS bands 1 & 4). This phone should work on any service in Thailand. GSMWorld.com does not list any active 3G carriers in Thailand. I don't know what the situation on the ground really is. At least one of the operators (True Move) offers reasonably priced unlimited GPRS/EDGE with their prepaid plans.

It is easy to buy a prepaid SIM in Thailand. No need to buy one before you go. Plenty of places in the airport sell them.

For all practical purposes, there is no 3G in Thailand. I think True has a couple of towers near Siam Paragon, but not much else. Everything else is EDGE/GPRS.

Any UNLOCKED quad band GSM phone will work with Thai SIM cards. AIS probably has the best coverage, but if you are just staying in BKK, anycarrier will be just fine.

T-Mo will unlock you phone if you have been a customer in good standing for a while. Call and ask.

I was able to get voice services using True Move very inexpensively. 100 Bahts ($3) for 90 minutes of local calls. I tried to use a SIM that provided data services (800 bahts/$26 per month that includes unlimited data and 100 local minutes) but it did not work. The card supports 3G, however I believe Thailand operates 3G at 850 or 900 Mhz and the phone only supports 2100 Mhz. I thought the phone might default to a GPRS/EDGE but it did not. I was bummed, because it would have made keeping up on email much easier. Instead I signed up for KSC wifi services at Starbucks. Not nearly as convenient.

I would be helpful to know if others have found a way to get 3G/GPRS/EDGE service on a MyTouch 3G slide. Note, some android and other phones support HSPA/WCDMA at 900 Mhz, unfortunately this phone does not.

    Cheers

    Wrong!
Thailand WCDMA/UMTS 3G is on 2100Mhz, (UMTS 850 may exist somewhere.), no such thing UMTS 900 anyhwere.
Only CAT's CDMA EVDO is on 850Mhz

If you need 3G service in Thailand you have very few choices. There are two service providers that I know of that provide 3G service throughout greater Bangkok. One is TOT and their WCDMA/UMTS operates on the 2100MHz band so any T-mobile phone with 3G should work fine. The other operator is I-Mobile with their 3GX service, which is also operates at 2100Mhz. I believe they are a MVNO of TOT. They should have prepaid sims at any 7-11, if not you can find I-Mobile shops in most malls like Central or The Mall.

I regularly travel to Thailand, so I know there is 3G within Bangkok. I have tested this myself with my N900.

I've been looking on various websites and see that AIS is supposed to have CDMA-900. However, I see no mention of 3G on their website. TOT is supposed to be WCDMA-2100 (Band 1) but getting any information from their website is just about impossible. I can't find 3G coverage maps for any of them.

Correction the Nokia 5230 Nuron doesn't have UMTS Band I (2100Mhz). It only has UMTS Band IV (1700Mhz) and V (850Mhz).
