Sony Ericsson 905a camera problems (quality)

Last year, I had a Sony Ericsson 760a with a 3 mp camera that I seem to remember doing quite well.
Now, I have a new Sony Ericsson 905a with an 8 mp camera. The focusing in the zoom range is horrible, even mottled color increasingly worse with increasing zoom.
Anyone knowing what's going on here?

you really shouldn't be zooming at all since all that does is degrade image quality, but I can understand sometimes it's needed.

just take the shot without zoom. then if you want to zoom in, you can use software on your PC to do so which should do a better job at a digital zoom than your phone can.
