So far I'm leaning towards the Nexus one, because I do use a lot of data on the Rogers Network and I know the Google Nexus one supports 850 HSPDA and the Desire only supports 900/1200, does this mean that the Desire will not run at all on the Rogers network with 3g speeds?
Yes. Currently the HTC Desire is available only in the UK and is not compatible with the Rogers network 3G speeds. You will only get EDGE. There is rumoured to be an AT&T version coming which will be 3G compatible with Rogers.

I'm hearing mixed reviews about the quality too but I'm not worried really. Usually the problems bubble to the surface and are somewhat louder than the trouble free (would you come onto a forum only to say that you device works perfectly? not a very exciting read IMHO)

Can anyone tell me the major disadvantages to having the Sense UI over the Nexus UI? this means for updates in the future as well, as I'm sure Google always does updates on the phone from what I have been reading. Also the widgets in the videos I have seen for the Sense UI, is that also available on the Nexus UI?
The Sense UI is really nice from the very little experience I've had with it. If you don't like the Sense UI, you can "turn it off" and run the vanilla Android 2.1, same as the Nexus One. The one advantage that the HTC Desire has over the Nexus One (presumably because of the Sense UI) is that it has more RAM. 576MB on the Desire vs. 512MB on the Nexus One. I think that the extra RAM is to ensure that the Sense UI runs smoothly, hence the presumably statement. The Nexus One will probably receive more timely updates to the OS as no other UI has to be tweaked to be put on top.
Personally, I am leaning more towards the Desire more for the better hardware features over the Nexus One. For me, the clincher are the hardware buttons and the optical trackpad on the Desire. Having said that though, I would NOT be disappointed owning a Nexus One.
