If you're in the States, there is a chance your carrier might give it for you for free. If you are in Canada, you're SOL. Go on ebay and buy an unlock code for around $5.

Read what I wrote above. If you can't get it from your provider/carrier, you will need to buy it on eBay or from other online unlocking services like Horizon Wireless.
mobileincanada.com is a good place to.
i got one from ebay yesturday for my storm and i just did it, works fine with my rogers sim. I'm not sure if its different from cdma to gsm devices, but my storm is a world phone. these are the instructions I was given (I c&p'ed the instructions for your given model rather than mine)
Model: Curve 8300, 8310, 8320, 8520, 8800, 8820, 8900, Bold 9000, 9700 Bold (Canada Bell/Telus Please look below)
Before you start, you MUST have a Sim Card (could be Active or Inactive) & turn OFF ALL wireless radios
1. Press the Menu key
2. Scroll to and select Manage Connections. Select Turn All Connections Off.
3. Press the red end key or the Escape key to go back to the Home screen.
4. Scroll to and select the Options icon.
5. Scroll to and select Advanced Options.
6. Scroll to and select SIM Card.
7. Type MEPD Note: When typing in MEPD the letters will not appear on the screen. This step opens up the personalization on the device.
8. Type MEP then hold ‘ALT” key and type number 2. Note: When typing in MEP ATL 2 the letters/number will not appear on the screen, this step open up the “Enter Network MEP” box.
9. Enter the unlock code.
10. Press the trackball (“Code Accepted should display)
11. Press and hold the red End key to turn the handheld off and then back on.
12. Once the device has powered on, follow steps 1 & 2 and restore connections.
I found step 8 worded poorly and confused me, what you should type in is "MEP2". If you need to hit the ALT button to get the 2 to show up then it makes sense, but on the storm that way didn't work, anyways.....
So you must get the 16 digit code, ebay is a good cheap route. Once you get that code, follow those steps and you're done. I already did a test call and my telus storm is running with my rogers sim card.
Happy hacking

Apparently no one knows that posting your IMEI number online is not a good idea.
Current device: White 16GB Samsung Galaxy SIII

Nothing surprises me anymore.
stupid question..........why is it bad to post your imei# online. What can someone do with it?
Wirelessly posted (Steve's phone: Mozilla/5.0 (BlackBerry; U; BlackBerry 9650; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.1+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0.0.431 Mobile Safari/534.1+)
Os 6 device I just powered the phone on and it prompted for the unlock code.
1. Get the code for free from your carrier. That only works if you're a customer in good standing with a 3-month history at that provider, and if they are the original issuer of that BlackBerry. Don't call Sprint for a code for a Verizon-branded BlackBerry. They don't have it.
2. But the code from www.horizonwirelessonline.com or some other reputable outfit.
3. STFU, you bunch of whiney biatches.
Those are the only choices. Don't like it? Suck on it.
In Canada, only 1 provider provides free codes afte 3 months (Wind Mobile).
All other providers charge an insane fee $50 and the phone has be active on the account. That means if you buy a phone from Joe Blow, you can't call the carrier and get the code. Joe Blow has to unlock the phone before selling it.
i don't know, i registered to find my MEP code too. Sorry.
