Help me choose: now or later

I'm getting the itch to get a new phone, and my contract is up in Oct, but as a Premiere Customer, I can get one now. No real need to worry about switching carriers. The price for Sprint is too good. At any rate, I really like the look and feel for the HTC Hero. I have a Blackberry 8330 and don't mind it, but would like to have a lot more cool apps.

Now my question: Should I wait for the next Google phone, or go ahead and get the Hero and then maybe get another Google phone next year around this time? Would I be happy with the apps on Hero, or is it sluggish in any way?

My decision is in the hands of the forum!

If you're comfortable putting a custom ROM on the Hero, you don't have to worry about any sluggishness. If you want to wait till the Summer or not is up to you, I have no issues with my Hero.

Sprint is also planning to upgrade the HTC Hero to Android 2.1 as well, which is rumored to be faster as well (better optimized, bug fixes, etc)...
