Installing Software on my Rumor 2

Maybe some one can help me. I like my Rumor 2 (pay as you go) with Virgin Mobile, however, my beef is with the online store.

All I can find are ringtones, games and wallpapers. I KNOW their is good software on the internet for the Rumor 2 because I found lots at http://m.getjar.com (on my cellphone). The problem is most of the programs I am interested in (RSS Readers) want to access the Internet and it seems Virgin restricts internet access to 3rd party programs, so I cant get my news.

I am willing to pay for decent programs but the online store is geared towards teens. I want my news.....not the latest hip hop ring tones. AM I blind? Does the online store have any decent programs for those over 30 years of age?????

Has anyone else noticed this? Check out http://m.getjar.com on your phone or (i believe) http://www.getjar.com there is SO much excellent software to be had.

Let me know what you think.

I have noticed this also. I believe it has to do with Virgin Mobile's demographic. Their services are geared towards teens and young adults and thus, their download store and applications are chosen based on that. Virgin does seem to restrict 3rd party applications on the phones. I can only assume that this is to help alleviate warranty calls based on bad software.

I doubt that Virgin restricts internet access to 3rd party apps. I have/had 2 phones through virgin...a samsung link and a samsung r651. I've had no problems installing and using any apps from m.getjar.com as well as any other java apps on the web. Google maps, MGMaps, Opera Mini and Ebuddy are must haves. I suspect your issue may be with the permissions requests that your phone forces the apps to make. If it's not a signed app (most that you download off the web are not), then the permission requests will pop up.

If that is the case, then there might be hacks available for your phone that allow you to bypass the permission requests, making using the apps more enjoyable. It's up to you to determine if you want to risk it..in my case, it was quite simple to hack both phones to bypass the requests.

You should be able to download from getjar, I did with my samsung link.
For some phones, like the Samsung Impact, you can even bypass the permission thing if you install the program through a data cable, but I'm not sure if that would work for a Rumour.

    Angry virgin lockout

got my girl a samsung mantra (sph-m340) because of its listed capabilities.
it is locked up tighter than a politician's payrate.
i have tried to download .jar files and .mp3 files (both of which the phone is capable of using) both through the built-in browser and by MMS message.
three different errors occur in the browser... two error 40?s during direct link download attempts and an 'access denied' when clicking an email attached file once the phone attempts to download it. the MMS will go through with the .mp3 attached and will let it play directly from the message, but when 'save' option is selected the phone says 'unable to save file'.
the bluetooth is only usable for headset or carkit according to samsung, and my Palm Centro and computer both are unable to send the Mantra files that way.
i'm afraid a data cable won't help, partly because i can't find drivers for the phone, and partly because it seems to be a system software based write-access lockout from the errors i get on the phone.
no help from virgin, they just tell me to download from their site (which i agree is full of useless junk anyway) and they have no idea what i'm talking about when i ask about installing 3rd party files and only repeat that ringers and apps are available from them.

the mantra lacks a card slot, or i'd be happy to try.
the pcs.cruz-network.net seems to be a web-based downloader, it only texts a link to the phone. i would have to turn on the data plan again to test it (at $1.50 a pop.) the best results i've gotten so far were via MMS which at least would play the files, couldn't even play the .mp3s through the lousy little openwave browser on the 4 or 5 other uploader services i tried out.
thanks for the advice and link, though! maybe next month when i have to pay on the phone anyway i'll allot the extra cash for web access.

i forgot to mention, this model also won't use a voice memo as a ringer like other phones will.
after much perusal of virgin mobile's company site, it seems they've deliberately locked out ringer functionality due to 'lawyer issues' over potential copyright violation. what a rip.
