I read comments on here all the time about how Nokia needs to overhall and improve the UI. What does that mean exactly? Is it one of those "I'll know it when I see it" things or are there specific things that people are looking for. There are only so many ways to display info on a square screen with links or buttons to press. When I compare android, apple, windows, web os and symbian touch really they are all fairly similiar in layout and design. I just don't understand what Nokia is supposed to do that is so revolutionary with their UI. I say just keep improving speed, battery life, and other hardware related things. I don't think you can ever satisfy the UI design people. They will almost always get bored and want some revolutionary change. What am I not understanding?

People seem to think UI is the greatest thing in the world these days. I think Symbian S60 UI is one of the better ones to use. For sure about the 5th edition one but 3rd edition is just great.
Frankly, my biggest fear is that they will try something too crazy with either the S^4 or Meego.. When I heard Vanjoki talk about his vision of a (still distant) future UI and how the whole UI would revolve around location (and maps) I was like "Oh boy.. give me my S60 back!
On a serious note: I partially agree. On the other, there can be a lot of variation within a basic design and I guess that's what people are looking for.
there is more to it than just pretty UI. the first thing i noticed when i switched from my n97 to the nexus one was that i can complete tasks a whole lot quicker. its a significant difference and i didnt realize it till i tried it out.

Folks,
My personal preference, I rather like the S40 UI than S60 (especially the voice call related UI) Really, sometimes I could not really understand why certain items are categorized as such, hiding deep inside a folder of a folder that does not look like folder itself.

Personally, when I say the UI in S60v5 is terrible, I'm referring to the "single tap here, double tap there" experience, everything being buried in options menus at the bottom of the screen (long press FTW), the lack of kinetic scrolling early on was painful, the lack of gestures (there are a LOT more gestures than pinch to zoom), and take this for an example, look at the process to add/move a widget on the N97/N97 Mini, couldn't it be much simpler? These are some of the things that need fixing
While i'm not going to argue that UI would not be important i think the smoothness of UI will be raised to another level compared to previous Nokia tries when Qt is the UI and application framework on S^4(replaces AVKON) and Harmattan.
Widget Gallery for N900 that's Qt4.6 example and Harmattan preview it feels like you got totally new device with the smoothness and effects.
S^4 for what we have seen seems to get a bit closer to Maemo 5 while Harmattan/MeeGo will yet to really be seen.

Totally agree. 5800 while now after who knows how many updates is okish is still not nice to use. Omnia HD just confirmed me that 5th edition just isn't up there.
I have an iphone to compare to symbian, and I honestly cannot think of something I can do quicker on the iphone compared to the 5800. If it is faster, it's mere seconds, and I do all the normal tasks during a day like email, texting, phone calls, browsing, etc...
Many things can be moved around in the menu system, so that you don't have to feel like everything is buried in the menus.
I like the iphone fine, but I just don't see how it's revolutionary compared to the 5800 or even a non-touch device like the E71/E72. I do the same basic tasks in the same amount of time. The iphone was really cool at first, but that wore off for me in about 2 weeks. It works great, but so does my old N78, and so does the 5800.

well sure maybe its only seconds you are saving, but maybe not always. i noticed it was easier for, let's say i'm browsing the forums, i get an email which i have to respond to a report post on hofo. it's very easy to just drag the android notification window shade down, open the email, then click a link inside the email to take me to a thread. then perform some type of action on that thread, go back delete the email, and then return to what i was previously browsing. these types of situations happen all the time to me, and it's a much smoother and faster experience compared to the n97 mini i had.

there are those who believe there are duplicate notifications and that the notification bar is just terrible and that who would buy devices to just get pinged by notifications all day long?
Anyway, all joking aside, I completely agree with you. Feels far more productive. The iPhone doesn't feel as productive to me, but at least the UI feels a lot more intuitive and smoother in terms of operation.

It's not always about doing things faster, sometimes it's simply about doing things in a way that makes the most sense.
Right, but they should have the ability to use it - provided they want the capabilities. Hardware might be a different bag, but software is no excuse.
It should be; the option is there and is up to you to enable or disable it based on your preferences. Not the way it currently is; we disable it and when we see fit - we will give you the option of using it.
That is one of the reasons I don't use Apple products. If I want something different on my device, be it workstation computer, laptop or cell phone - I have the ability to do so, be it through hardware configuration or code. If I'm inclined to change it, the platform allows me to without making feeble attempts to stop me.
