Move to Verizion for Incredible or wait?

I have been a long time AT&T subscriber. My wife and I live in the city and don't have any problems with the service. That being said, my wife took a new job outside the city, and has reception problems on her phone. She pretty much told me that she can't deal with having a phone with no bars of service where she works. She asked me to start looking at Verizon.

I have an Iphone 3gs and I love it. That being said, I understand how powerful the Wife Acceptance Factor is so i have to get rid of it and move to Verizon. That isn't a big deal. Her phone is out of contract and mine is a year and 2 months away. It wouldn't cost us much to port our contracts over, and I can sell the 3gs 32gb phone pretty reasonably as well. At least enough to get a nice 32gb Ipod touch and cover the cost of the ETF.

That being said, I am now looking for a Droid phone. I am certain this is what I want to move to from the Iphone. That being said, I don't know what I should do.

Option #1: Tell my wife to hold on and we will move when the Droid 2 is released. I like this option, but how much money I can sell my Iphone 3gs for will go down once as the Iphone 4g is announced/released. The Droid 2 could be released in July/August time frame.

Option #2: Upgrade and get an HTC Incredible. I love the reviews i have heard about this phone. The downside is that if the Droid 2 comes out, I could be kicking myself being as that the Droid 2 could be a much more superior phone. In addition, I am also wondering how much of a community the Incredible will have in comparison to the Droid.

Option #3: Port my contract over and get a Droid 1. Don't know why I would go this route other than for the community, rooting, and the better screen from what i have read about. Still, its an option.

Can I get some advice from the Android people here? Thanks!

I would say that since there are a few more phones coming out soon, wait. That way you have more of a choice. Even if you get a Droid or Incredible soon, u still have the 30 day window to exchange for something else. Just time it right to be with the release of the newer phones and u good to go. If u trying to maximize what u get for selling your current iPhone, try Ebay and hope someone gets it for what u want to sell it at.

    I say a do a combination of Option 1 and 2.

The Droid 2 specs that I've read have essentially brought the phone up to par with the Incredible as far as hardware goes...so I doubt you'll be too put off by getting an Incredible now and then having a few new phones come out this summer. I personally think that the Incredible is going to be the baseline sweet spot as far as hardware goes (1ghz, tons of ram/rom, nice screen) for the next year or so. The new phones may offer HD video, but I think that will be the only real advantage over the Incredible. This could all be a bunch of BS when they officially announce them but again, you are correct in assuming the value of your 3GS is going to diminish every day from here on out.

If you need a keyboard...obviously just hold off till Droid 2. It sounds like you don't if you love your iPhone 3GS.

Option #4 - Move the wife to Verizon and you stay with AT&T. When the phone comes out that you want make the switch for yourself.

(To the OP), how certain are you that VZW will work for your wife? Do her coworkers have VZW?

There are others that she works with that have Verizon and it works well for them. Everyone who has AT&T where she works has a paperweight phone for the most part.

This is also an option. The only question is, what phone? Should I wait for the Droid 2? Should I wait until June for the Apple developers conference to see if Verizon is getting the Iphone? I would prefer us to be on a family share plan.

The value of my 3gs 32gb is going to go down next month after the conference. Which is why unloading it now for $100 or so more sounds better to me.

I don't need a physical keyboard. I love the software keyboard.

That being said, I have been searching trying to find Droid 2 specs. So far, I have found none. Can you provide me with anything you have found? As you said, it could be BS.

There is still part of me that wouldn't mind waiting it out until the Iphone developers conference. That being said, I am not object to pulling the trigger sooner and selling my Iphone 3gs for a better profit.

I'm not sure I understand why you both need to be on the same carrier. If you love your 3GS, why can't you keep it and put your wife on VZW on her own plan? Do you have a lot of in-network minute usage or something? Or are you just looking for convenience?
Create an online wishlist directly from your cell phone by texting or scanning product barcodes.
Search for Present Partner in the Android Marketplace or go to PresentPartner.com.

Convenience mostly. Another is money savings. If we both stay on our own plans, we will spend about $40 more than if we are on one plan together using a family share plan.

VZW is not getting the iPhone this year. As to which phone to get or wait for, the Motorola Shadow (code name) is supposed to drop this summer. I believe there's a thread on it.

Thats the issue right there. If I wait until the conference when they announce the 4g, the resale value of my 3gs goes down about 25% or more. I am not concerned about keeping the iphone though. I think the droid will be just fine for me. Especially as a techie guy.

Which means, do I pull the trigger now and get an incredible or do I wait and get a droid 2 when it hits later this summer and take a $100 hit on the resale value of my 3gs.

If you are that concerend about the price you can sell your 3g for then I say do it now. As far as what phone, there are a couple of threads on Droid vs. Incredible. You can read the pros and cons for yourself there.

I was in a similar situation a while back. I was already a VZW customer. I was deciding whether to get the Droid or wait for the Incredible to come out. I was tired of waiting and got the Droid. Now that I have it, I am not sorry about the decision I made. If I were deciding on a phone today, I would still not wait and get the Inc.

Thanks for your input. I think the incredible is nice. I read the reviews on the Droid vrs the Incredible, and as someone who doesn't need the hardware keyboard, this HTC phone would be good for my use.

I have noticed that the smartphone contracts on Verizon are pretty expensive. The cost to get out of a smartphone contract on AT&T is $175 - $5 per month you go through your contract. So if you bail 10 months in, you pay $125 for the ETF. On Verizion, its $350 - $10 per month, so double the cost.

This ultimately means that I will have to stick with the incredible for 2 years or pay some huge fee for a new phone if I so desire. Not a huge deal being as that I went from the Iphone 2g to the 3gs when it came out. Still would have been nice to get the 3g though.
