This may or may not pertain to you, but someone suggested to me about using a "Task Killer" and for me I have just come to realize that this phone is like a computer and I only get 2-4 hrs of battery time on my laptop so I'm not too upset about it.

I've had the Droid for a week now, and my battery life is awful. I use Pandora, Orb, XiiaLive and iheartradio. ALOT. Atleast 1 hr 30 mins max in one day. Aside from that and taking some pics. My battery only lasts a day. I thought my Eris was bad. It at least gave me sometimes 2 days worth on 1 charge. Any ideas how to improve battery life. I keep the display off when I'm streaming. I use the built-in speaker not Bluetooth.
Ideas? Thanks

i had the same problem. i turned down the brightness on the display and it increased my battery usage by about 50%.
on a smartphone like the moto droid, i wouldnt expect much more than one day even after all the tweaks.
the moto is actually very good compared to the new htc incredible.....

Does it last a full day? That's about all I would expect nowadays to be honest. Maybe more if it was just idle...but honestly these phones are never idle, especially as shipped. If you can get an honestly full day of talk, data, messaging, email, games, music etc and not have to plug in during the day you are probably doing about as good as possible.
edit: though you did say the Eris lasted longer sometimes. Are you still in the "new toy" stage though playing with it more? That could be affecting things. Make sure to let it run down to shutoff at least once so it can calibrate itself to the battery nicely.
I have Advanced App Killer installed. I have been using it but not really anymore than I used my Eris since it isn't my first Android phone. I have my brightness set to auto. I am letting it fully die tonight. Hope all this will help.
From what I have read and my experience with the Droid, one day on a charge is typical. I pull mine off the charger around 6:30 AM and by 10 PM I might be down to 50% or so. I just drop it back in the cradle. Not like my enV2 where it would last several days.Originally Posted by xmguy
There are quite a few things you can do to fix battery life.
As someone suggested, turn your display down! That thing is ridiculously bright and you can save a lot by keeping the screen down.
Turn off GPS, wifi, bluetooth while not on use, make liberal use of the power widget, it is your friend. There is no sense in having GPS on while you're in a building somewhere while you're running apps that try to look for location.
Make sure to use the back button to close out of an application instead of just hitting the home key.
Turn off options within apps that try to constantly poll for updates. Case in point, by default, most apps do this. If you download Twidroid, the default behavior is to constantly search for new tweets which is just a waste of battery. If I want to see new updates, I can open the app and click refresh. If you're using a weather widget, reduce the polling time down.
Outside of that, there is better battery life to be had by rooting your phone and overclocking your CPU and running a low voltage kernel. I do not recommend this unless you research it and know and understand what you're getting in to. I am not implying it's difficult, but it raises interesting security issues and it's something you should research before diving into.
And lastly, I could go on for days about application killing programs but I'll sum it up in one sentence: don't use them. Yes, they can help you reclaim battery life by keeping applications out of memory, but they can also cause OS instability and really go against what Android is all about. Let Android do its job and you wont need to use them. If they work for you, more power to you as it should be about choice, but my personal suggestion is to avoid them.
As stated, one days worth of charge is pretty good, considering everything you are doing on it.
A little obsessive...
i would like to add one more thing. my phone is rooted and im running the latest version of bugless beast. its version 1.0 and was released may 1st. there is code written into the rom that automatically sets your cpu slower when not being used and speeds it up when you need it most. so basically, while your not using your phone and its idol, but polling for emails, widget updates etc.... it slows the cpu way down. then when you start playing with your phone, bang.....it ups the cpu speed. this also will save a ton of batter, and you will no longer need the task killers![]()
Already mentioned many times above but a day is not "poor battery life" on a Droid unless you're not using it all all during that day.
Actually, they can have the opposite effect if you're auto-killing apps that need to run and constantly attempt to start up.Originally Posted by utkanosA
Yep, depends on the app but it is true.Originally Posted by briareus
True and that is why you should/need to exclude certain apps from the list so they don't get killed. That said tho I'm one who agrees with the idea of them being pointless as they seem to do more harm then good from my findings.Originally Posted by briareus
No one mentioned the power control (or manager) widget.
My phone only lasted an hour or so when I first got it. My suggestions are to check Settings>About phone> Battery use at the end of the day. Your display should be have the highest usage. The widget will help with that; it has three settings. Use the lowest you can tolerate. You can also adjust it in Settings. I'm looking at my phone now and Tunewiki has used 3% and I've never used it. I installed Juice Defender but it is also using 3%, but I'm assuming it is being used. Unless you need to receive emails instantaneously, you can turn off sync in Settings. That helps not getting distracted; you can sync and read at your leisure. The power widget has sync, bluetooth and wifi toggles also, very handy.
Also here's a helpful link about batteries; to me, essential reading:
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/ (previously posted on hofo)
My battery life has increased tremendously, so don't give up. Of course, a primary reason might be because I play with it less.
As you are streaming music regularly, unless you are using as a Walkman, I find it helpful to leave on home/car charger. As you can see in the above link, a trickle charge is useful; it is not healthy to let a lithium ion discharge below 40% if avoidable. So no harm in leaving on charger; though I read it shouldn't be more than 24 hours.
As everyone else has said, a day's use is good.
Someone posted on another thread that "this is a computer that happens to make phone calls. How long does your laptop go before it needs to be plugged in?"
Makes complete sense to me... these aren't flip phones that we are used to lasting days on end between charges... these have huge processors (for a mobile device) and we are on them constantly... at least I know I am... I have learned that I need to have a charger with me at all times with these smart phones... starting with my Palm Treo 600 years ago.
