5800 3G not working on Rogers

Hey guys. I have an unbranded Nokia 5800 and recently signed up for a data plan from rogers.

The phone is in dual mode and I can surf the web fine with using Edge but when I tried to use USMT only I don't have any signals at all. Does anyone know why I cant connect using 3G? I called rogers and they said everything on their side is working and the rep suggested I look around on hofo for a *code that shows whether or not my phone has 3g disabled.

Is there really such a code? I looked up the list and closest thing I found was the Network Lock Status thing which doesn't show on my phone...

Also is there a big difference between using 3G vs Edge... If the speed isn't that great then I guess I'll just stick to edge instead...

    Thanks.

    Rojai,

    Greetings. Welcome to HoFo!

You need to find out which variant of 5800 XpressMusic you are having first because ONLY 5800d-1b RM-428 would support 3G in the UMTS Band II (1900) and V (850) that Rogers has deployed. You can verify it by keying in *#0000# or better yet, take the battery out to reveal the product label in the silo.

    Rojai,

No, it is NOT just about changing the product code or software. It is the baseband components that are NOT compatible in North America... 5800d-1 RM-356 is an EURO/EMEA variant with 3G support in the UMTS Band I (2100) and VIII (900) only.

I suggest you to sell it and get the NAM variant, 5800d-1b RM-428, which is quite abundant in supply around and quite affordable these days.
