32 GB micro SDHC card for Sanyo Incognito

    Hi guys and gals

Like the thread tiles says, I am curious if I can use 32 GB micro SDHC card with Sanyo Incognito and get full 32 GB of storage.

The spec sheet says that Incognito supports up to 16 GB micro cards. Granted, the specs/reviews may be written before the 32 GB cards hit the market.

I want the extra storage because I am planning to use the phone as MP3 player extensively, and I have a lot of music lol. After finally getting 3.5 mm adapter and hooking up my trusty Sennheiser PX100, I am impressed with sound quality of the phone.

I called Boost tech support already, and they told me that the phone will work with 32 GB cards, but I can only use 16 GB of 32 GB available.

    Is this true?

Also, what are good music player apps for the phone?

The default player sounds good with some EQ presets, but it is very limited in terms of features.

The data sheet shows "At least 16 GB" So I assume it will be able to handle more than 16 sometime, but maybe the current firmware is limited to 16gb.

    Thanks for speedy response.

I did ask the customer support representative about potential firmware update to expand external memory capacity. He told me that he does not know anything.

Is this capacity issue common with phones?

I assumed as long as the technology is the same any capacity would work. Granted, 32 GB is maximum for SDHC cards.

I'm not sure really. I would assume that the phones ability to read and handle a specific size card would be dependent on the firmware.

Yeah, firmware seems to be the only explanation. It sucks that 32 GB cards are not yet supported though. On the other hand, 16 GB cards are pretty cheap nowadays.

FWIW, I just got 16 GB class 4 micro SD card with SDHC and USB adapters for 35$ from Amazon.

I just need a good music app and I am set.

On any device I have ever used that can handle SDHC micro cards you can go as high as the card populates. So, you should be fine with 32GB, even 64GB and more, moving forward. I would be very surprised if the Incognito weren't able to handle everything you are throwing at it, micro-card wise.

SDHC maxes out at 32GB - SDXC is the new format for 64GB and up to 2TB eventually. You will have to buy a phone in the future with a SDXC slot to use anything above 32GB.
I use to own a LG Fusic several years ago when stereo bluetooth was a new thing and the phone could handle up to a 1GB card - when I bought a 2GB card to try out it would see the entire card and would play songs off of it but every 2nd or 3rd song the music would turn into a screech and i would have to skip forward to another song. No such issue when playing the music on my computer... I think it had something to do with the phones processor.. I am sure a firmware update would have fixed the issue however.

I must say that 199$ price tag on 32 GB card is crazy. The card costs more than the phone itself lol. I might pick up one down the road when it is under 100$.

I read about SDXC cards. 2TB of storage is unbelievable! Granted, it is probably far away in future.

Heh, look at the price on a 256gb SATA SS Drive. That's some expensive hardware.

If it was a processor issue, there's a good chance that a firmware update would not fix anything since it would be a hardware problem, not software.

Since phones are becoming more and more like computers each day, I'm willing to bet that the Incognito cannot and won't go higher than 16GB microSD. Why? Two reasons:

    1. Hardware - If the processor can't handle over 16GB, then it just won't go over 16GB. Sure, you could still put a 32GB card into the phone, but it will only read 16GB of it. You'd have pretty much wasted the rest of the space (including your money). Or, you'll have issues like you had on your previous phone.

    2. Cost - If the phone was capable of going higher than 16GB, the phone wouldn't be $150 MSRP, it'd be a lot higher. It takes some real decent hardware to be able to support a 32GB card. While I love my Incognito, it's just not that powerful.

I'd say just stick with the 16GB cards since that's more than enough for most people. In fact, it's almost too much unless you're planning on using your phone as an MP3 player all the time (in which case, I'd suggest an actual mp3 player so you have some battery life left for emergency phone calls).

So far, battery life has been excellent. I have been listening my Incognito for about 8 hours, and my battery is still full. Granted, I am using wired headphones.

Carrying both mp3 player and phone sucks when I work out.

I can not hear the calls when I am listening stand alone mp3 player, so that is another problem.

For me, there is no contest really.

I hear ya but I carry both my mp3 player and phone since the mp3 player is an iPod touch with apps that I use a lot... I'm just used to carrying both.

Did you try incognito MP3 player with good pair of headphones? You might be pleasantly surprised.

You are right though. Ipod touch can do other things besides music playback.
