    Softbank 740SC

    Hey all!

I've always been interested in keitai but they're usually a bit pricey and the usability of keitais outside of Japan is not guaranteed. But I just found that the Softbank 740 SC can be bought for very good prices on ebay and does not need a hypersim. That's where my question lies.

If it does not need hypersim, does it mean that someone unlocked the phone (just like a hypersim did just without a hypersim) or is the phone actually designed to be used outside of Japan without a hypersim?

In either case, would I have the full basic functions of other cellphones outside of Japan? Obviously, even if the phone came with the capability for TV and those electronic wallet function in Japan, it cannot be use outside. But is it 100% no problem with reception and the use of SMS?

Furthermore, is it normal for such a phone to be sold at around $160 ~ 200 US? I am a bit suspicious about this low price.

Thank you for your help and answering my question in advance!

price is about right for what it is, a mid to low end handset in japan. and samsungs and LG have higher percentages to be unlocked.

sms should work and reception should be ok in 2100 3g and in gsm areas excluding those with gsm850

T Hmm.. True. The phone's specs don't look that great compared with the majority of other Japanese phones.

I am not entirely sure if my cellphone company has 2100 but I am absolutely sure they have both 850/1900. Would that be fine?

Sorry I asked more questions. I'm not absolutely sure how cellphone frequencies work more than half the time >_<

if you live in NA you dont have 2100 you will have 850 (ATT) or 1900 (TMO and ATT though ATT's is not everywhere) forget about 3G you will get 2G signal at best and data may work not sure.

It really is not that great of a handset. screen size is decent. if you want a better handset unlocked from Sharp PM Me. I can get you something under 200 that has better specs.

He's talking about the 740SC, which is a Samsung and doesn't come with any Japan-unique feature (like 1seg or mobile wallet) at all. Doesn't even come with Bluetooth actually, only infra-red. Very very cheap handset; only reason you'd get it is for the clamshell form factor in my opinion.

Haha you are all correct. I do live in NA, specifically Canada.

And I basically want the phone for its clamp shell design... 3G isn't something I need because the plans up here is VERY expensive and I can't afford it. And to my understanding, the 3G provided by Rogers here ain't that great. And the fact that the Japanese make good quality stuff that can last me for quite a while.

And thanks, island.boy! I'll definitely check out your blog tonight (after I get home from work... =p) and will definitely PM you about the Samsung.

Again, thanks for the help so far everyone!

Hi! I recently bought this unlocked 740SC phone and it's usable here in the Philippines (at least the call and sms messaging is working fine)..but i'm concerned about how to activate MMS messaging.. can somebody please help me how to manually configure the handset so that it will be ready for activation of 3G/MMS? My network provider cannot detect the handset for automatic configuration..another concern: do the software updates that can be downloaded from the softbank website affect the unlocked fone?will it lock the handset again?... in addition, where do i access games?? =D I really can't do anything about it except for its basic purpose (call & SMS). Hope somebody help.. Thanks!
