MP3 Ringtones on Rumor Touch figured out!

Finally got it figured out after many trials, it is possible but not drag and drop.

Take your MP3 and trim it down to around 30sec and save it at 96kbps (you might be able to go higher but this worked and sounded good so test away!)

Replace the .mp3 extension with .qcp (apparently that's the format they use) and email it to your phone (phone#@vmpix.com), wait for it to arrive and then open the email, click the 'more' button then 'view attachment'.

You should see the file you sent, now touch the '>' and choose 'set as ringer', you could also save it but it gives it a new filename like 'audio898964'

It's almost 1AM my time so if this isn't making any sense let me know

    Happy ringtoning!

Yup, works on my Touch as well! Thanks, mate.

Pretty much do exactly how he explained it. I personally set mine to 60kbps & mono (sounds really good & loud). Used iTunes to convert it, dragged the file to the desktop then changed the extension.

I think the key here is to BE SURE to send it to the "@vmpix.com" address instead of the normal one.

Worked for me with 128kbps file.
It should be noted that it changes the file name to a numeral string. Anyone know a way to change this back?

Good job figuring this one out man. Cheers.

i'm glad someone found a fix for it but just a thought, has anyone tried phonezoo lately? i set up my account as a network that wasn't listed a while back and it worked for ringtones set to wap and sms. idk if it still works but just thought someone might want to try that.

Sorry. I was half asleep myself when I replied, didn't see you'd already mentioned it changing the file name.
Once saved, I cannot figure out at all how to access the actual folder it is in. Supposedly /sounds. Granted, there are a lot of things in the phone that seem like they cannot be accessed. The folder hierarchy built into this phone sort of drives me nuts.

Perhaps a more viable alternative would be to save them all to a gmail folder and just text them to myself as I change them.

Yeah, its sorta assbackwards how to get to them since there's no real file browser with this phone.

You have to go to Main Menu>Settings>Ringers>Click on Messages or Voicemail (its quicker this way to see them)>Then click on My Audio from the popup. They're in there.

Question: would dropping mp3 files into a memory card via memory reader on your computer not work? Would you be able to use mp3 files on your memory card as ringtones?

Great to hear! I've been on the fence regarding dropping my postpaid Sprint plan and going the Virgin Mobile route and, as silly as it sounds, the "no custom ringtones" was the big thing holding me back from getting the Rumor Touch.

Not that I've been able to get working...went that route first, even dropping .qcp files onto the card but no joy there.

I'd like to know what the "assigned media" means when you change a ringer from the contacts menu. To me it sounds like a folder on the SD card, but it's probably locked out even though then menu item is there.

FWIW, the emailing and file extension steps quoted above represent the Achilles' heel of this workaround. If VM decides they don't want their customers to email ringtones to themselves, it would be simple for them to set up filters to block ALL inbound emails containing file attachments with the .qcp extension.

Now that this workaround is public by virtue of being posted here, don't be surprised if the capability disappears in the near future.

In other words, don't base your purchase decision on this workaround.

If you have a message pack or a monthly plan, it's a text message. If you have no message pack or have gone over your pack allowance, emails cost 25c to send or receive!

That sure is assbackwards. And unfortunately does not allow for changing the filename back to something legible. Thanks though.
