The article is two weeks old, but it's a brief look at what Thumb Cellular (thumb of Michigan, all that extended 3G coverage) is doing. I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't been any real news out of this LTEiRA carrier on their LTE rollout, but it's good to see that they're are least doing something.

I'm suspecting that the I-70 corridor from Kansas City down to Salina will be turned on in July including the cities of Topeka, Manhattan, Junction City and Salina that are on the corridor. I also saw a report from someone in Manhattan that noticed 4G in that city for a few minutes about three weeks ago.

I wonder if they will include I-135 from Salina down to Wichita at the same time? These are heavily travelled Interstates and Verizon has said that the interstate system is important to them.

Junction City, Manhattan, Newton, Wamego, Leavenworth, Andale, Gardner, DeSoto and Landing Kansas have been officially announced as going live on July 19th. I also have a friend currently in Topeka report he has been receiving 4G for the last 2 hours solid.

From yesterday's announcements, it looks like we might get some pretty good-sized territorial additions in this month's LTE launches and expansions. It's time they started doing that and they are going to have to get busy with large-scale territorial additions in order to make the end-of-2013 LTE overlay goal.

I also saw the they will be expanding north from Wichita on July 19 including McPherson. It sounds like the I-135/I-70 corridor will be pretty much covered on that date.

Yet still no Hutchinson KS... Verizon and AT&T really have no love for that town... (AT&T is still EDGE only there, at least VZW is EVDO...)

Hutch is FAR bigger than McPherson, but unlike McPherson, it is not on an interstate highway, and everyone knows that's where everyone in the country is, so therefore, neither Verizon or AT&T will ever pay any attention to it. At least that's the cynical view, and looking at where these expansion press releases talk about, it's the interstate highways where Verizon will be expanding in Kansas this month.

Course, one could ask then, why do Garden City, Dodge City, and Great Bend have Verizon LTE while Hutchinson does not? A very good question and one it would be interesting to get an answer for, but that will never happen. As far as AT&T is concerned, who the heck knows, they just upgraded Medicine Lodge to HSPA+, a bump in the road compared to Hutchinson. Eastern Kansas is a wasteland for AT&T, all roaming except for thin strips along the interstates and islands of native in southeast and northeast, and islands around McPherson and Hutchinson, while in the western half they have blanket coverage. Just amazing.

Yeah I would think considering the State Fair is there (i'm from Hutch originally) that would motivate VZW or AT&T to put 4G (or at least 3G in AT&Ts case) there... Guess not...

Keep the faith, Verizon has 100% native coverage in Kansas, so therefore it will be blanketed with LTE by the end of 2013. Then who cares about AT&T, they will still be EDGE in Hutch anyway! LOL

Verizon has proved that they care about vacation hot spots, but state fairs would make sense also. I know they bring in a couple of cows for Nebraska's state fair in Grand Island, but yet they have no LTE. I know during Nebraska football games they would bring in cows with LTE and would it light it up for the weekend. If this area doesn't have LTE by then, I could see something like that happening.

I was told this week that we should have had LTE by now, but charter is having issues laying backhaul to our locations. I was told it could be October before we have it Kearney.

On the bright side, the new Verizon corporate store will be opening soon.

AT&T corporate should just add LTE to Hutchinson just to see what their uptake is when they add LTE to an area where they have EDGE. I'm still shocked they don't have 3G there with the State Fair.

Fiber backhaul for Verizon in Southern Illinois in 2013 - about time.

The little fingers of AT&T coverage extending out of the Wichita area are built amid a sea of roaming, until you go west and meet up with that solid wall of 3G coverage that extends over the entire western half of Kansas. AT&T hasn't shown any inclination of overlaying LTE on top of EDGE, unlike Verizon which has launched LTE in a few areas where they don't have existing coverage at all, and I'm not talking about LTEiRA areas. There is one in southeast Oklahoma, a few sites around Durant, an area they did not cover previously at all, even with 1X.

The fact that Hutchinson, population 40,000 just 40 miles from Wichita, is stuck on EDGE with HSPA+ just 15 miles away, is absolutely ridiculous, but typical AT&T. The terrain is absolutely flat, so that is no factor. I look for Verizon to fill in the gap between Wichita and Great Bend in this round of coverage expansion, they just haven't announced it yet.

As close as they may be on the USCC deal, AT&T may just be waiting for that to be announced to do anything in KS. I believe they're close.

See the rumors on the USCC forum. I don't think anything is done yet, though.
