Why do you think Verizon is keeping launches tight to the belt. Could it be the new player's AT&T and Sprint.
I am guessing they don't want a lot more headlines like "America's most reliable 4G LTE Network goes down, again". Maybe they'll just roll it out quietly from now on, see how each rollout goes and then announce it.

The easy pieces of fruit has already been picked. Pretty much all of the most populated parts of the country has service. The other 20% of the population is in the other 56% of the country however. It's still coming, but it's not going to be every other week like it was last year. Don't forget they have to the end of 2013 to finish the rest.

It would be nice to finally see some of those large chunks of territory finally begin to light up, though. The ones where one tower in a rural area will light up as much territory as it would take 20-30 to do in an urban setting. 6 weeks into '12 and not much has happened yet.

Didn't they recently bump the deadline up to mid-2013 because they are 6 months ahead of schedule?

No. Their latest press releases still state the end of 2013. Now, that being said, since they are ahead of schedule, they very well may finish in mid-2013, but they have not indicated that is the case.
It seems Veriozn has been different in 2012 regarding their LTE roll out. They were silent all through January, save for the south tip of Texas, and they haven't said anything else. Since they typically launch/talk about LTE in the middle of the month, perhaps we will hear something this week.
If they can do it, I suggest completing LTE by mid-2013 to be even more ahead in the game. Since AT&T only committed to 150 million LTE pops by day 1 2013 (~55 million less than Verizon has today), perhaps Verizon decided to ease up a bit. Who knows? I hope they continue pushing as hard as they have been.
Verizon Wireless: America's fastest, largest and most reliable mobile broadband network.
Just a twenty-something year old college graduate speaking geek on HoFo!
https://picasaweb.google.com/bcltoys...73324666267954 Took this picture this morning in Middletown Delaware. Is the biggest panel a LTE panel some at the local Verizon store said that they have seen LTE light up on their phone a couple of time's.
Yes, that would be LTE. That is relatively new. The site is completely reconfigured. It was an old 'shark fin' type of panel for 1X before. You can see AT&T above it and Sprint/Nextel off to the left side. Funny thing is, AT&T has HSPA+, Sprint has EVDO, and Verizon will soon have LTE and EVDO. T-Mobile pokes along at GPRS. It is the only site site in Middletown proper. There are two on the border of Odessa and Middletown, one being AT&T and the other housing the PCS carriers. This lone Verizon site has to serve all of Middletown, Odessa, and Warwick, MD. Other carriers have sites in all 3 towns.
I grew up in this area and my best friend lives in Middletown. I can then assume they'd fill in from Middletown to Dover at the minimum? Now if Verizon would only add a cell site in Odessa a few miles east. Everyone else has a site there...and Verizon plods by with a -99 signal outside on the highway.
I will be quite ticked off if Middletown and Smyrna Delaware have LTE before my current home which is 20 minutes from Philadelphia. I am in a solid red area...but there is no LTE on my local towers...thus no coverage.

With this configuration what's one small panel 1x the other 3g and the tall one 4g/700mhz.

But at the same time, it is very important to VZW to have full LTE coverage. AT&T has many nice benefits from coming from a GSM technology; primarily, it doesn't matter when a user leaves an LTE area on a VoLTE call--it can easily and nicely fall back. There is no VoLTE to 1X voice handoff--thus, if VZW wants to use VoLTE (which they really do!) they need complete LTE coverage.

The large one in the center is LTE. The two panels on the either side of that LTE panel appear to be the same shape and size, no? This is the same setup that one of the Dover, DE LTE sites has. It used to be 4 panels per sector and now looks exactly like this. I think these are new types of panels that can do 1X and 3G on all frequencies.
Most Verizon sites look nothing like this one in Delaware. Most common are:
1) 2-4 Sharkfin panels and 0-2 small white panels. Generally I'd think the small white ones are EVDO, but there was one tower with 4 panels and cellular 3G. They recently added a small white panel and now 3G is on 850/1900. Trocks has posted pics like this before. http://gallery.wirelessadvisor.com/s...hp?i=6067&c=34
2) 2-3 white panels with a line between them(they look exactly like the at&t panels in the picture...the GSM att panels are the top set in that photo.) and 1-2 small evdo panels. I don't see this configuration in many places outside Delaware. See an example here of 2 and 2 http://gallery.wirelessadvisor.com/s...hp?i=6724&c=34

Yup....older sites are easier to peg than newer ones for sure. That LTE panel tends to stick out though. Here is the post of mine you are referring to.
On Thursday, Feb. 16, the company will expand its 4G LTE network in Little Rock, Ark.; Rapid City, S.D.; Clarksville, Tenn.; and San Antonio, plus turn on its 4G LTE network in Cookeville, Tenn.
I really like that VZW puts up an announcement every month!
Based on last year, March is when they really started expanding like crazy, so perhaps next month is when we will see a bunch of new cities.
The sad part? VZW's only new city, Cookevillle, TN, was supposed to be up before the end of 2011, as it still has a star on it today on the map at Verizon's 4G landing site, which indicated "cities where LTE is expected in 2011".
Let's hope we get a massive press release next month. I really hope Verizon isn't taking it easy since they already made their mid-2012 goal. Let's keep the speed up!
