Phone numbers can be ported between carriers, that is enshrined in U.S. Federal law.
While a phone is "active", a TracFone begin_of_the_skype_highlighting*****end_of_the_sky pe_highlighting SIM card is locked to the TracFone it was activated with. For example, if you removed the TracFone SIM and placed it into a different TracFone, this other phone will NOT work.
The phone would have to be deactivated first, then you would need to request a new SIM from TracFone and purchase an airtime card to reactivate the phone.
Based on my own experience when I once reactivated a TracFone, the new SIM they sent, activated on AT&T, because the original SIM was activated on AT&T. If your phone originally came with a SIM that activated on T-Mobile, you might end up receiving a new SIM that will also activate on T-Mobile.
You would likely have to prove that you do not have T-Mobile service where you are located, in order for them to send a SIM that will activate on AT&T - if the SIM can be activated with a phone that was originally activated on T-Mobile.
I spoke with Tracfone today. Because I get T-mobile coverage where my main area/zip code is, they will not give me an AT&T card. They said I would have to request a new phone number for an area that does not have good T-mobile coverage. Oh well.
Why? You can port your phone number to ATT and get a c4 sim card. Phone numbers are not locked to certain carriers like they once were, but can be ported to the carrier of your choice.

They will tell you what they want you to think, regardless of the truth.
If you use the information on http://thejmart.com/links.htm? You can get the SIM card you want/need.
Many others have done it!

I second this route. I bought a LG 420g recently that came with a T-Mobile SIM because I am in the area that has both T-Mobile and AT&T services. Used info from Jim's website, I was able to get an AT&T SIM card and activate in my area on-line without talking to anyone. The zip code I used to get the SIM card was 49719. Jim's website is a bit out of date but still usable. If I remember correctly, TF now asks you to provide your current SIM serial number before you can proceed.
This is becoming needlessly complicated. It should be simple to follow Jimates tutorial to get an AT&T sim. Be aware that the phone may be temporarily deactivated if you tell the system that your sim has malfunctioned. Then when you put in the new sim and tell TF to activate the phone, it should happen. Since it will be a port, it might hang a little. If you have a problem, we will help you.
Is the AT&T Sim even an issue with this phone. People have posted that everything works on the L6420g with the TMOB sim.
It should not be. I have two 420G's, one is on AT&T, the other is on T-Mobile. Both phones work perfectly, including Mobile Web. I'm very happy with them.
Depends on where you go, I'm sure. My 'second home' is in a somewhat rural area in New England (a town not out in the boonies) - No T-Mobile service.
Yeah, T-Mobile generally works okay but sometimes you're stuck without service. I recently traveled to an area where my T-Mo phone (postpaid) kept roaming on AT&T for both voice and data. T-Mobile's network is not as good as Verizon where I am, but they are definitely better than AT&T as far as sound quality and reliability goes.
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is my drug of choice.

On the T-mo phone, have you successfully sent an mms message with an attachment from your pc email to the T-mo phone? When receiving an mms message on my T-mo phone, the text comes through but the attachment is stripped off. However on my ATT-based phone, the email and attachment come through intact.
What has been your experience with mms messages and attachments on both your phones?

I saw a problem in sending a MMS/picture message from a T-Mobile phone, to PC e-mail, not the other way around.
A couple of years back, a bug (problem) report was filed with Mozilla (they release the Firefox web browser and Thunderbird e-mail programs), because Thunderbird and SeaMonkey Mail (the SeaMonkey Suite is the successor to the Mozilla suite) would not display MMS/picture e-mail messages sent from a T-Mobile phone.
It was initially tracked down to one specific e-mail header (the headers are not normally seen by end users), however, more recently, the header in particular is no longer included, yet the messages still do not display. All I see with Thunderbird and SM Mail are image placeholders.
In Windows, the only e-mail program that displayed these messages with all graphics, was Outlook Express (from Windows XP). I have not yet tried it with Windows Mail (from Windows Vista.)
In Linux (another operating system), Evolution was the only e-mail program that successfully displayed the messages sent from the T-Mobile phone.
MMS messages from the AT&T phone to e-mail, display perfectly with the same e-mail programs I tried.
As I have LG420G TracFones on both AT&T and T-Mobile, the phones themselves are not the problem.
Up to now, I have not sent an MMS/picture e-mail from the PC to either phone.
Since you appear to be having this same problem, but in reverse (from the PC to the phone), the problem appears to be on T-Mobile's end and I would guess that it is in the way their system handles these particular messages.
OK I just got a call from Tracfone in reply to one of my emails (!!!). While it is a bit off topic from this thread, because I started the discussion here, I will update here.
I bought the LG 450g based on one zip code but spend half my time in another area that does not get T mobile reception. I spoke with Tracfone a few days ago and because I get T-mobile coverage where my main area/zip code is, they will not give me an AT&T card. They said I would have to request a new phone number for an area that does not have good T-mobile coverage.
Today she said I need to get a CDMA phone (no more LG450G :-( ) and then they would hook me up in the other area with Verizon (I thought TracFone only used T-mob or AT&T now, but I was wrong). I could not get clear if i would need a phone number from that area as well, but I am assuming so. However. i may talk to Tacfone sales (who she told me to talk to next about that question). The phones that Tracfone sells for that area did not appeal to me, but I may just have to accept it. My friends (who live in my other zip code) tell me that Verizon is the best coverage over there.
I could not make sense of Jim's website instructions because I was trying to go LG450G to LG450G and just change the SIM, but it sounds like I need to go this other way (Verizon coverage is much better in my other zip than AT&T).
Thanks everyone for the discussion - I am learning a lot about cell phones!
Found something new with the 420g. If you set the home screen to display "tool bar". You get 5 semi-configurable tools than you can access by clicking up arrow then right/left arrow keys. Still playing with the phone to see how configurable they are.
