    Dell Streak

Incredible demo if you have not seen it

Bad news - the version on O2 will be 900/2100 - BOO!

I will be in the UK shortly and was thinking of picking one up. I'm guessing the N. American variants will be 850/1900 so won't work on EU 3G

Not to mention it's Android 1.6 initially.

But still, this is very interesting if you compare to an iPad. I'm guessing it will have to be around $499 (unsubsidized) to compete with an iPad 3G 16 gig...and note it doesn't appear to come with any MicroSD card (flash memory)

Dell has stated they will be releasing a variant for AT&T which will work on Rogers/Bell/Telus. Also claimed they will provide an update to 2.2 later this year. Speculation is Aug/Sept for a US release. The US release might have 2.2 but I would not hold my breath on that one.

Pricing from CarWarehouse is being quoted at free on 25 pound tariff, or 429 pounds outright, so this should be under $500 outright in the US. So far our brilliant Canadian carriers have not said a peep about getting it.

I just hate waiting for AT&T - they're always so late. Telus has been "early" to the N. American game on some Android handsets (eg Hero, Milestone) so we can always pray!

$500? Am I missing something? I already think the Ipad is overpriced but $500 for a 5" "large cellphone with the phone" seems even more overpriced. The Dell Streak 7" looks promising except it'll probably be ~$1000.

Correct me if I am wrong on this, but the 5" streak is going to be a smartphone, not a tablet computer, correct? look around at the unlocked prices of android smartphones. 3.7" screened nexus one is $529 I believe, 4" xperia x10 is $600+, moto milestone with 3.7" screen is $550-600.
$500 for a 5" screened unsubsidized android smartphone is actually dirt cheap.
whether it can actually realistically be used as a phone or not at its size is a whole different matter though.

Oh, my bad. Dell keeps calling this thing a tablet, I didn't realize it was actually a large smartphone. If that's the case, I don't see any issues with the pricing at all.

In case anyone missed it, Dell has confirmed a $500 unlocked NAM version for end of July. Some details are still fuzzy, such as the size of the memory card (if any) included, and of course the bands (though my bet is on 850/1900 3G only, since the Euro version is 1900/2100 only). It's also "possible" it will have a new build of Android (eg 2.2) but I doubt it!

Definitely have announced/demoed a AT&T version (was online at D8 yesterday) so it will work on Bell/Rogers/Telus. I also believe a T-Mobile version was seen going through the FCC process. Ron Garics (sp?) stated the version direct from Dell will be unlocked and included the dock so $499 should get you up and running. Some sites are also claiming that the bundle will include a 16 Gb SD card, but given my experiences with Dell sales I think they will be selling the card as an addon. Bundling the dock is done as a differentiator.

They have also stated they will do an OTA update to 2.2 "later this year".

Given that the we want to play with carriers message was repeated multiple times (mainly to get the carrier subsidy to bring down the upfront costs) it will be very interesting to see if anyone in Canada announces the Streak.

I will definitely be getting one of these when they are released at the end of July. Looks amazing, way better than the iPad because you have the openness of Android and also it can be used as a cell phone.

The funny thing is that beyond the iPad not having phone features (which is the first deal breaker) and being too large to be portable (the second deal breaker)... I spent some time playing with one yesterday (Canadian launch) and it is just too heavy. I am a big guy and it is too heavy to comfortably use one handed, or to read in bed holding it up (both must have usage scenarios). This really surprised me.

The quoted weight is not bad from a technological point of view but the leverage produced if you try and hold it by one edge, especially in landscape mode makes it unusable for longer periods of time (which is exactly the usage model I have for reading ebooks).

Modaco has a Streak forum. Paul (the host) has already rooted his Streak, so there should be lots of interesting information coming out! It'll be interesting if/when someone has Froyo loaded on there!
