The short answer, yes. They're cutting costs everywhere and they've finally realized that in this economy they have the reps by the balls and can make them do the dirty work cheaper than a telemarketing company.
That will be the day when I start becoming a telemarketer. I told my boss a long time ago what they could do with ROCCS and I sure as heck am not going to start doing cold calling for businesses.
I wouldn't be happy about this if I was working at AT&T again. I always saw my job as a face to face position dealing with customer issues and selling phones. I was never interested in doing telesales, that is a whole different field. I also think that if AT&T is not training its employees on making cold calls to businesses before asking them to do so, it could just lead to lost sales.
They tried the union at my store, and as usual the union was absolutely worthless. Turns out that they can make you do cold calls, as part of driving business to the retail store.
Sometimes at my store they'll have people back on roccs for 3-4 hours. They make you do roccs calls if your prior day's features were below $90. Makes absolutely no sense, your features were low the day before, so we're going to stick you in the back away from customers and try to close cold calls.
