The LG Env2 is a discontinued phone. IIRC, it does not require a data plan. The Env3 is the current phone, and that does require a data plan.
If the sales rep told you the Env2 required a data plan and you caught him on it, he would probably say he thought you were talking about the Env3 that is in the store.
(I'm a bit skeptical about the veracity of Verizon sales reps right now after I was hit with a load of BS just the other day from a rep who tried to sell me the idea that it is normal to only get 48 hours or less of standby from any phone. I got 4 days easily from my Dare and it looks like that is the norm for my Moto W766 with the latest software. My LG VX8700 is doing pretty good also.)
