    Android 2.2 & Verizon Crippling...

Anyone worried about Verizon potentially crippling Android 2.2 devices? They seem to really be pressing sales on the Mifi's and with Wifi hotspot on the Droid, it seems like that is a feature that they would possibly cripple. T-Mobile has crippled their market to not show any tethering apps, and AT&T has crippled their Android phones so users cannot install 3rd party apps.

Does anyone worry that Verizon may cripple 2.2 so that we have to pay for Tethering and/or Wifi Hotspot?
What seems to be the officer, problem???
Sir, please step out of the car!
    What? What'd I do??

Sure getting it free would be great, but I don't mind paying for it if it comes to that vs removing the option altogether.

That's still better than them removing it.

If that's the case, I'll get a custom rom with it built in.

This is a question I've been pondering as well as I consider making the jump to Android before 'unlimited' plans go the way of the dodo. I don't tether enough for a dedicated tethering plan, but have gotten accustomed to having the option when needed in a pinch. Tethering was one of Android 2.2's biggest selling points, but I just had a hard time seeing most of the carriers allowing it, particularly Verizon.

Since I'm fairly naive on Android, is it possible for carriers to prevent devices from installing 3rd party apps? (like a PDAnet if you'd rather not root your phone.)

I seem to remember people saying ATT locked out 3rd party apps on their android phones.

If Verizon really cares to go head to head with AT&T & the iPhone they should allow free Wifi Hotspot but limit it. It doesn't have to be amazingly fast, I doubt any of us are going to use Wifi Hotspot to download full length HD movies, but instead occasional browsing where Wifi isn't available. So if they allow us to use it but limit the speed, I think that would be a huge selling/advertising perk for Verizon in the Verizon + Google vs AT&T + Apple prize fight.

It will come with tethering, the palm pre does, I can't see them censoring it... but what will ultimately happen is 4G LTE will not have an unlimited data tier and then they don't have to worry about what google does.

I did not realize that AT&T had replaced the Google search with Yahoo. I Hate Yahoo. I Hate AT&T. I Hate Time Warner. Since those are my only realistic options for Internet access at home I have to choose unless I move and I am thinking about that.

You can't really base it on them offering the wifi hotspot for free on the Pre Plus. They're only doing that to entice people to get it because the sales were crap and they are trying to do anything possible to move the phones. Just look at the 49.99 price tag.
