    For countries outside Europe, emergency/police number aren't always 112 (999 in UK & Hong Kong) - for China & Taiwan, it's 110.

    As taken from wiki
Most GSM mobile phones have 112, 999 and 911 as pre-programmed emergency numbers that are always available.[1] The SIM card issued by the operator can contain additional country-specific emergency numbers that can be used even when roaming abroad. The GSM network can also update the list of well-known emergency numbers when the phone registers to it.

Using an emergency number recognized by a GSM phone like 112 instead of another emergency number may be advantageous, since GSM phones and networks give special priority to emergency calls. A phone dialing an emergency service number not recognized by it may refuse to roam onto another network, leading to trouble if there is no access to the home network. Dialing a known emergency number like 112 forces the phone to try the call with any available network.
Part of the GSM spec is that all GSM phones will have 112 as part of the phone's programming that 112 will reach emergency services. If no central combined emergency services is available to a PSAP it will be routed to the police.

True enough. I guess I assumed that OP had brought a phone that would be compatible with the networks.

I thought I would bring the old thread to the top in order to update any info we might have about using TMO prepaid overseas.

This morning I was told by "technical support" that I could use the prepaid SIM in the UK and Germany, but that calls would be $1.50 per minute.

I was also told that in order to call me, folks here in the US would have to dial the international codes, then my US phone number(!) to connect to me.

As this seems opposite to what I've experienced in the past, I thought I'd check with the group and see what the more recent experiences are. I have a 850/900/1800/1900 phone / WCDMA data 1900 / 2100, a Verizon Fathom (unlocked of course, and currently running on TMO prepaid here).

    thanks! Mike Nassour

I have no real life experience but this page does seem to suggest that international roaming is now available to prepaid customers Prepaid additional services (look at the bottom), albeit at very high rates ($1.50 and up). Apparently there is no roaming agreement for Denmark so I have not been able to test it.

Wrong. How would anyone know if you are overseas? Obviously they might know but then again they might not. It is up to the system to find out where your phone is located, not the person calling you.

I think whoever informed you that US callers would have to dial international access codes to access someone who's roaming in Europe was really wrong. First of all if a North American caller uses 011 plus 1 plus area code to call a North American number the call will fail since dialing the North American access code is only used to call numbers outside the NANP. A person whether in the same city as the called number is treated as any other number. The receiving person will pay whatever the international roaming receiving rate for the call. That said, a GSM mobile caller can always place calls in international format and the call will process and bill as normal e.g. to call 311 867-5309 can be called by keying +13118675309.

That is exactly what I thought, and is an example of the crap service that TMo prepaid customers are receiving. I even TOLD the "technical support" CSR that I believed he had been given bad information (he had to put me on hold to get an answer to EVERY question). But he insisted he was correct even after I asked him to doublecheck three times. But it does appear that TMo Prepaid CAN now makes calls from the EU to the US, even if it is $1.50/min?

And no, it's really cheap since you can't make any regular calls with it.
I take it, no one has seen this?

    On http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/p...ional-services

Scroll down to "International Roaming Rates" and one will find...

    http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/c...llingRates.pdf

It has far more than just Canada and Mexico on it...

So a T-Mobile SIM card will work in Europe but not a T-Mobile USA phone. You have to put your SIM in a quad-band phone to even get a signal.

OK, that makes a bit of sense then. Personally, I buy nothing but quad band phones since I do travel a bit. This is just the first time I've had to fool with TMo prepaid on a trip. As long as the SIMs are OK, then I should be able to use the phones on TMO Prepaid over there if i had to.

To be more precise you need either a quad-band or a tri-band phone (900/1800/1900) or a non North American dual band (900/1800) phone.

Instead of flaming me, look at the PDF! It ALSO lists THE FREQUENCIES IN USE IN EACH COUNTRY.

Having said that, I have become completely disgusted with the level of discourse on these forums as of late. Try to have an intelligent conversation and it never happens, people hide behind their keyboard (or phone) and flame people left and right. It's not worth wasting time over.

So, you folks can have your forum, I'm out of here.

    Well....whatever?

Anyway, that nice little PDF published by TMo appears to have left off a minor country...namely the UK! Does anyone either have that rate or find it on the PDF?

I was in Spain a few days ago and turned on my world phone with my TMobile US Prepaid SIM. Immediately I got a text that says 'Stick together abroad: Dial + country code + nmumber to place calls Check rates or Talk to TMobile at 1-505-998-3793". A second text warned me that data can cost up to $15/MB.

I did actually try to make a call on the phone, but didn't realize I was using my TMo SIM (thought I was using my prepaid European SIM). The call did not go through - it disconnected immediately - but that's likely because I have $1 in my Prepaid account. But it did seem like if I had a balance it would have used it. Which I wish I did, because I had to use the airport phone to make an emergency call, and 2 3 minute call cost me $90

Same thing happened when I was in Nigeria last month. I did not try to make a call, but called it and it rang. I did not answer it of course. I have not even checked if Nigeria is one of the countries on the list.

OK folks, I think I'm set and thanks to all who provided info here. One more thing.....<grin>.....how do I dial?

I know the USA country code is 01, so from the UK or Germany, I would just dial 01+(area code)+(phone number)?

    thanks again!
