No. You have to know the international dial code for the country you are in. I believe it's 09 for the UK. What I do is store every number on my phone (including US ones) as +countrycode+number. So, a US number will be +12345551212, a UK one will be +44780456789. The '+' sign indicates to the GSM network to automatically prefix the number with the international dial out code for whatever country you are in. So, if calling from a mobile phone, just dial as above. On some phones, you have to hold the zero for a few seconds to get the '+' sign.

I know the USA country code is 01, so from the UK or Germany, I would just dial 01+(area code)+(phone number)?

    thanks again!

The easiest is to learn how your phone dials internationally. Most phones just holding the 0 key turns into a + character (Nokia you press the * key two times rapidly.) then just add the country code, area code and the person's number. For all of North America it's 1 then add the area code and number e.g. to call 311 867-5309 you'd key +13118675309. You can also place calls like they do in the UK and Germany. In all of the EU key 00 before the country code plus country code plus area code plus number. You'd key 0013118675309.

Oh, and you can use "international" style dialing using the + character on any number and the call will process as normal and bill as normal.

Great, got it (I think). So for calling the US from the UK or Europe we punch (whatever key gives us) the plus, the 1(area code) (phone number).

If that's right, even I can remember that!

    Thanks!

Either make calls the way the locals do or use the + character on your phone. USA is country code 1.

To clarify the above, the international dialing prefix throughout the EU (and in many other countries) is 00. So to call the UK, you'd dial 0044..., the US would be 001, etc. This is true for landlines but also works from mobile phones in these countries, BUT you are ALWAYS best advised to save and dial phone numbers from a mobile with the + and country code format as described above (+441911234567, +12125551212, etc.).

Oh, and to answer the earlier questions, international roaming beyond Canada and Mexico has been available for well over a year now for T-Mobile prepaid, and I've tested it in the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Poland (this has been addressed in earlier threads). It worked fine except in Poland, where it just would not connect to T-Mobile (formerly Era). And yes, you need either a quad-band phone or to put your SIM into a local dual-band phone (900/1800 MHz). You can also connect to TMO using UMA (Wi-Fi), which was the only option available before international roaming was enabled; it is still much cheaper, as it costs the same as using it in the US.

Motel75, have you actually connected in the UK? It is not listed on Tmo's list, and it is the most popular European destination for North Americans,

Yes, though I just gave it a quick test while passing through Heathrow airport. The roaming list TMO provides has quite a few mistakes in it (like names of operators), and this I guess is just one of them.
