Simple Mobile Tethering

Hey, now that Simple Mobile is unlimited T/T/D, could I use a GSM Phone and tether it to a computer to get internet?

If so how can I find out which GSM phones are capable of this?

1. Permissible and Prohibited Uses

Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted.

Examples of prohibited uses include but are not limited to: (a) server devices or host computer applications, including continuous Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing applications that are broadcast to multiple servers or recipients, “bots” or similar routines that could disrupt net user groups or email use by others or other applications that denigrate network capacity or functionality; (b) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections; (c) any activity that adversely affects the ability of other users or systems to use either Simple Mobile’s services or the network-based resources of others, including the generation or dissemination of viruses, malware or “denial of service” attacks; (d) accessing, or attempting to access without authority, the information, accounts or devices of others, or to penetrate, or attempt to penetrate, Simple Mobile’s or another entity’s network or systems; or (e) running software or other devices that maintain continuously active Internet connections when a computer’s connection would otherwise be idle, or “keep alive” functions. For example, you cannot use a Data Plan for Web broadcasting, or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or supervisory control and data acquisition devices.

I wouldn't tether with Simple Mobile, however:

T-Mobile's unlimited WebConnect data stick is only $40 and includes 5GB of data (after 5GB, usage goes down to GPRS speeds)

There is also the option for no-contract.

I have been using MySimpleMobile since March. Don't recall any dropped calls and the Data speeds are great. I just did a test and got 2 down and 1.3 up here outside LA.

I have tried tethering just as a proof of concept, but it works! They don't "allow" tethering, but I don't see how they would know if you used it infrequently. I have yet to need it in a real world situation.

I have no problem recommending MySimpleMobile. Yes, they are a thrid party, and yes they are prepay, but who cares!? You save $20-30 a month over other plans. The cost is almost identical in the first year, and the following year you save a couple hundred bucks!

If you get caught, they have grounds to kick you off of the data plan, regardless of whether you tether a little or a lot. Simple reportedly (I saw it) had a one gig cap in their Tn C (Terms and Conditions), but that's been changed to more abusive behavior then a specific cap. There have been reports from diffedrent sources including Simple Mobile's own Facebook account that users hitting one gig have been kicked off (data, not talk/text).

The local MD's doing a lot of damage control here trying to clarify between Simple and the local customers. We'll see if SM will end up doing another Page Plus (but with data, not talk). As with ANY mvno, "unlimited" can be a dangerous path to thread for the buyer. Caveat Emptor.

I recommend a prepaid division because they are much more accomodating of "unlimited" users then mvnos are or ever will be. Prepaid divisions will beat mvnos every time for cost margins if not price. At least with "unlimited" plans.

Any idea what criteria they might use to judge whether a user is tethering?

Ditched VZW for SM a few months ago.

VZW wanted 89 for unlimited talk/txt + 30 for data plan (NOT unlimited)

SM wanted 60 for unlimited talk/txt/data/web

Switched to cut my bill in 1/2 from 120 to 60!!!

Haven't been able to pay ATT for home phone/internet - configured my HTC HD2 running Android to do wireless tethering --> been using my laptop/wireless at home instead of going to library/St. Arbucks.

Until today - received text message from SM stating
"Your Simple Mobile Data service is at risk of being suspended due to violation of terms and conditions. Call 800-219-9702 for additional information."

Someone asked how does SM know I'm tethering?? I'm not totally sure yet but I'm guessing they (as do all USA carriers) monitor the data usage and packet types.

Not sure if there is a way around it besides switching to T-Mobile's monthly pay-as-you-go "unlimited" plan.

And, yes, SM explicitly prohibits tethering in the Terms and Conditions doc located on their home page. The 800 number above directed me to their T&C.

Arbee322, how much tethering were you doing, about how many mbs per day?

When I knew I was gonna port out last week, I tethered on them a few days but never got that message to call a number though I didn't tether much actually but it was like 40mbs per day.
