Thanks. Sorry I didn't see that (nor did the Koodo rep explain it to me as an advantage over my current CityFido plan). I take it then to mean that with this $35 plan Koodo plan I can call within any Koodo local calling area to within that Koodo calling area without incurring long distance charges, but of course will incur them if I call outside the area? I do know that with my zoned CityFido plan that if I travel to another CityFido area in Canada I will incur charges even when calling from within it to within it. However, even Koodo has that advantage I still wouldn't give up what I have extra with Fido for it as I don't travel enough in Canada to make it worth it (plus have those other ways of handling calls when I do).
A couple examples:
With current City Fido plan (Toronto), you visit KW, which is not a CF zone.
-You make a call to a KW phone while in KW. You pay Out Of Zone charges ($0.25/minute)
-You answer a call while in KW: you pay long distance per minute and OOZ per minute.
With current City Koodo plan, same scenario
-You make a call to a KW phone while in KW. You pay nothing
-You answer a call while in KW: you pay long distance per minute only.
With your original CF, the main difference is that with the new CF, you can visit another CF zone and not pay OOZ charges, but still pay applicable LD charges. With your CF, you also pay OOZ regardless of if you are in a CF zone or not, as long as you are outside of your CF zone.
With current City Fido plan (Toronto), you visit Calgary, which is a CF zone.
-You make a call to a Calgary phone while in Calgary. You pay nothing.
-You answer a call while in Calgary: you pay long distance per minute but no OOZ fees.
With our old City Fido plan (Toronto), you visit Calgary, which is a CF zone.
-You make a call to a Calgary phone while in Calgary. You pay Out Of Zone charges ($0.25/minute)
-You answer a call while in Calgary: you pay long distance per minute and OOZ per minute.
You can see zoning is just another way to pull in extra revenue on top of long distance revenue. City Koodo was originally zoned, but they very quickly got rid of it.
Wireless LCA are archaic and not many carriers use them (that's why you see US plans are usually nation wide) but in Canada they are still the norm. Adding zones on top of LCA is just taking advantage.
Carrier unlocked iPhone 4
Unlimited airtime, Unlimited CAN/US long distance, Unlimited SMS to CAN/US wireless numbers
2500 Call Forwarding minutes to CAN/US numbers
CiD, 6GB
Google Voice for visual voice mail with message transcription, conditional greetings, unlimited messages (vs 35 message cap), remote retrieval from any PC or phone, no auto-purge after 10 days and most importantly no $7-$8 charge.
Thanks for that great explanation. Yeah I always wondered why in the US everything is nationwide yet here we still have these old-school LCA's. I'm one of those rare people who is happy to just not answer my phone when travelling away from my LCA and to get my voicemails free via email and then just call back who I want to when I want to via Skype at under 3c min or just text them back for free. I know that doesn't work for everyone, especially those on business.
Old CityFido (Unlimited voice, 1,000 min CF, CW, CC) , 6GB, VP (VM, CID, WC, 2,500 SMS)

When I was younger I used to travel a fair bit in Canada and learned LCA's can result in gigantic bills. I imagine those with zone plans are even more surprised, given it can result in about doubling just the long distance charges.
So for $85.00/Month+Taxes you have Unlimited Local Calls (Unzoned), Unlimited SMS & MMS, Call Display/Name Display, VVM, 2500 Forwarding minutes, 50 Min LD in Canada & 6GB of Internet access with tethering.

I take it that the unzoned unlimited voice $40 competitive price plan is from retention because you mention other carriers' competitive plans and threaten to leave?

I forgot about that plan, but yes, it is an unadvertised response plan to Koodo. It would seem to meet many of your needs and you;d be able to stay with Fido for the tenure and fido dollars.
(just too bad it has to be a response to their competitors retail offerings)
So then, thanks for indulging me, and I guess I stay with Fido and keep the $30/6GB and add the $15 VP (VVM/CID/WC/2,500 CF min/Unlimited SMS+MMS/50 min CDN LD) for a total of $45 and add one these?:
$35 CityFido - unlimited voice, local Toronto zone only, total $80
$40 CityFido - unlimited voice, unzoned, total $85
$45 CityFido Old - unlimited voice, old larger Toronto zone only (what I have now), total $90
I got the attached plan on a 3yr renewal. I don't need text as I hardly use it. I am told the $35 plan is unlimited, non-zoned and if I travel to another city in Canada, I don't pay any charges.
As a matter of fact, the agent told me with the UL NA option, I won't pay any extra charges whatsoever for calling on the Fido network. Is this true or did I get misled? please advise. thanks...
Both Bad Liar & the agent are correct, your $35.00 Voice Plan give you Unlimited Local Calls without any Zones.
The $20.00 Canadian Long Distance Option cover all the long distance within the entire Fido/Rogers network coast to coast...
Finally the $30.00/6GB give you access to the Internet and access to tethering.
So local calls & LD calls in Canada along with 6GB of Internet access...
Hope this can help.
