This may be true. I got my 3G in January 09, and I am eligible to upgrade with an upgrade fee of like 18 bucks or something.

Is there any truth to the rumor that AT&T is making all Apple iPhone users instantly eligible to upgrade to the new Apple iPhone4 no mattery how long they have had their iPhone?
I have spoken to two Radio Shack managers at two seperate locations today...and both mentioned the "rumor".
I am not "legally" eligible until 3/15/11...and am prepared to pay the $399 "partial upgrade" price. But...if I could be like the cool kids and buy the new iPhone4 for $199 I sure wouldn't argue about that either!!![]()

Not me... I bought a new one in March '10, and am not even close. I have asked as late as this morning.
i got the 3GS last year, i am NOT eligible for an upgrade
same here, just texted *639# and im eligible for a full discount on 1/10/11, looks like it will still be the $399 price for me on the 24th unless they do something different in the next 2 weeks and i highly doubt it
I'm only eligible for the $599/$699. Sux. I'm using my daughter's line so it's all good.![]()
Unfortunately this rumor is just that... a rumor. As AT&T has already said, the update is for existing iPhone users who are eligible for an upgrade by the end of this year. That's it. Non-iPhone owners don't get it and iPhone owners eligible past 2010 don't get it. Nothing is gonna change this unfortunately.

The contract does not have to end by the last day of 2010. The article you posted clearly says that one has to be eligible to upgrade by the end of the year. In most cases one is able to upgrade several months before the end of the contract.

that would guarantee there will be another provider by the end of the year and att just wants to save face.
I just made it. I would have been eligible in Dec 2010.
I wonder if there is any connection to the rumor I heard that about a month after the new iPhone is released that Verizon will start selling them as well. So maybe they are pushing upgrades on people to secure more contracts before opening up to competition.
Everyone focuses on ATT losing the exclusivity. This could have been a stipulation of Apples as part of an agreement maintain the exclusivity. This just increases the number of iPhones Apple can sell while saving them the money of having to adopt different technologies to bring the iPhone to Verizon.
Rumor mill for Palm?
