Windows still interfere with GPS signals considering it's the phone's first attempt in a while
GPS satellites are moving all the time.
The best method is for clear day... open space, don't cover the left top corner cause that's the GPS antenna, and just let it do it's thing.
Once you have your first initial lock without A-GPS, try to connect once in a while (everyday?) so your phone doesn't lose track of the sattelites it's connected to

I don't know what you are all having such a hard time.. just tried with my Nokia n95 2 meters from window trees galore on the campus there less than 2 mins for a GPS lock.. e-71 same.. my xperia less then 10 seconds.. I think it has to do more with the hardware..
I heard that wind bought a load of referbs so perhaps thats what you got? 10 mins is crazy let alone 20 !!
My 5230 is uncertificated lol and all set up, but when I finally got around to applying the latest update, I can no longer drag and drop files into the phone memory using Windows XP. However, Ovi suite, and using the phone as a high speed internet source for my laptop still works fine.
What happens is when you plug the phone with the new S/W into the USB port is that Windows now detects an MTP device & tries to install drivers for the MTP device, and constantly fails until it times out. But you can no longer see the phone in Window's explorer.
I tried uninstalling everything Nokia including legacy stuff and Ovi, and then ran the Nokia Pc Cleaner which dumps a hundred or more registry entries associated with Nokia. But no joy when I reinstalled Ovi. The USB modems work (bluetooth or hard USB cable access to contacts/mail/music/photos) but no more file transfer in to the memory card. In my case, this is the ony way I can get a pile of files in and out and back everything up easily because my SanDisk card cannot be read in either my laptop or my desktop.
From reading others around the world who are trying to find solutions to the SW update problem, it seems there are fixes in the very latest SW update, but we don't have that here in Canada yet, just version 20.8.007.361.02.. So if you want the faster free lock on GPS and free voice nav waliing & driving, just update the Ovi maps S/W using Ovi suite (and your phone as a high speed modem!) Hold off on updating the 5230 firmware for now.
The latest GPS lock in the 5230 is under 10 seconds here in Vancouver, using no data, just the chip in the phone, but I recommend you not update the firmware, just update Ovi suite and the Maps software...

I have been experimenting further, and found a route which works for all access of the Nokia 5230 memory card, and includes using your cellphone data plan with Wind to high speed (at an amazing low price! If you are content to use Opera mini with its 1/10 dataq use and never stream video, you could even get away with the 50MB $10 a month data plan)
Download and install the MTP driver package from uSoft on your pc with a genuine copy of Windows. I have XP on two pc's, and downloaded MTPPack12.exe. Note you need to run the validation tool to verify that you have a genuine copy of Windows.
Then you download the latest PC suite from Nokia, just ignore the phone ID stuff and grab a copy. Short story is that PC Suite works for all the above: photos, music, contacts, emails, phone memory drag and drop, and best of all high speed internet using your phone! I am typing this in on the connection...
Best thing is that PC Suite is tiny (34.7MB) vs Ovi (98MB!) so runs faster. Yay!
