Question Think the VN250 Cosmos is right for me?

Hi, I recently lost my long time cell at an airport, a sprint branded motorola krzr. I've decided to switch to verizon and join my family's plan. Now I'm trying to decide whether to buy a new Samsung Intensity or LG Cosmos from Verizon or get an old LG ENV2 off of amazon. I want a phone that:

    1. has a full qwerty keyboard
    2. does not require a data plan
    3. allows me to back up contacts to my pc via USB cable
    4. allows me to upload mp3s to the phone via USB cable
    5. allows me to set the ringtone to an mp3 that I've uploaded via USB cable.

Note - I will never access the internet. I don't need a music player. I don't use blue tooth. I will barely ever use the camera.

My old krzr handled requirements 2-5. I previously used the USB Handset Manager suite from Mobile Action to upload Mp3s I created using Audacity to the phone. The mp3s wouldn't appear in the music player, but they would appear as ringtones, which is exactly where I wanted them anyways. The guy at the verizon store said I could only download ringtones from verizon or via a text message. Then again that's what sprint told me about the krzr too. Then I found out about the USB Handset Manager suite and did everything via USB cable.

Unfortunately, the handset manager program doesn't support the new Cosmos phone, so I won't be able use that. I'd like to know if I need it upload mp3s and download contacts via USB to my PC. That's a make or break feature. Can someone please advise if this is possible? If yes, how can it be done without connecting to the internet or utilizing the data services?

I see that there's a program called DataPilot USB Kit For LG for sale on a few sites. I assume it's similar to the Mobile Action software, but I don't really know how well it works. If anyone has used it for the Cosmos, I'd appreciate your opinion.

Aha! DFW lost and found reports that they now have my old cell phone. It's on it's way back to me, so maybe I'll hold off on getting any new phones for now.

    Congratulations?

Anyways the cosmos would NOT be for you. While the phone has a microSD card slot it does NOT have a music player. The Intensity does have a music player though and the card slot. Since they are running on newer vzw f/w they should have USB mass storage support which should let you hook it up to your computer easy.

the lg vn250 will play mp3's if you put them on an sd card. transfer songs from your pc via the charging usb cable without the wall charger adapter attached to it.

Nice to see they found your phone. To answer your questions in case others are looking at this phone...

Correct, no Verizon data plan required. Note however if you use the Backup Assistant to transfer contacts between an old phone and the Cosmos you may incur a data or application purchase charge (around $1.99). And if you don't disable (or remove) the Backup Assistant program after transferring the data it will sync nightly, using data transfer, with your online My Verizon Wireless account contact section so you may incur a data charge for the nightly syncing.

Yes you can transfer/backup contacts. Unless you want to copy them from the phone to the SD card (creates them in vCard format) each time, you would probably need to use the LG Outlook Sync utility (free) to sync between the phone and Microsoft Outlook on a Windows PC.

Yes you can transfer MP3's (and several other supported media files see supported file list below) between a PC and the phone's microSD data card. Once on the microSD card you can play the audio (and other media) through the phone's Media Player. You can also transfer the file into the phone but it isn't required to play the media. You will need to install the LG USB Modem Drivers, found at this link, before setting up the phone for USB connectivity. Once the drivers are installed you must configure the phone (which has a phone formatted microSD card installed and the USB cable attached to the phone and PC) so it activates the USB mass storage mode. Do so by selecting on the phone: Menu --> Settings & Tools --> 3. Tools --> *. USB Mass Storage. With the USB storage mode activated Windows Explorer will see four folders on the microSD card. The relevant files can be transferred to each of the relevant folders (my_pictures, my_sounds, my_ringtones, and contacts). The media player will then access the relevant folder on the microSD card to play or show the new files. For contacts you would have to transfer the contact (vCard) from the microSD card to the phone before it will appear on the phone's contact list.

Yes, see above. The ringtone can be copied into the microSD card's "my_ringtone" folder. Then set the ringtone on the phone. The phone will read the ringtone from the micoSD card so there is no need to copy the tone to the phone.

Note: For all media files, in addition to transferring them via the USB method detailed above, they can also be transferred to the microSD card via a card reader. This allows PC/MAC/Other OS users to transfer media without the use of a USB cable between phone and the computer. Format the card on the phone first before transferring the media from PC to the microSD card.

Here is a general list of supported media files for the phone.
My Pictures: png, jpg, bmp, gif
My Sounds: mp3, mid, qcp, acc, aac+
My Ringtones: mid, midi, qcp, pmd, aac, mp3, wav
    Contacts: vCard

There is no full fledged media player. The media player on the Cosmos is very basic and limited. Basically you can only start and stop individual songs/ringtones/media files.

Other comments on this phone, for those interested. This phone doesn't support video. Either capturing it from the phone camera or playing it from files. The camera does show video when put into camera mode but it will NOT capture video. Don't know if this is a Verizon crippled feature issue or a limitation of the phone firmware. Pictures can be saved to the microSD card. It appears (AFAIK) messages cannot be saved to the microSD card. Hopefully this will be rectified in the future for those who are heavy messaging users and want to save their messages to the microSD to free up the internal phone memory. Its possible that Verizon has crippled this along with other features of the Cosmos like they crippled features on other phones, like the Motorola V3m.
