Help with sorting out family plan HUP rules and iPhone upgrade?

Ok I can't actually find an answer for this specific situation searching the forums on this so I hope someone can help me ( or point me to the right post)

I have a family plan with two lines (line 1 is about $80/month, line 2 is about $60/month) Line 1 has voice + a BB data value pack and Line 2 just has voice

Line 1 is at its 2 year mark in December, Line 2 is at its 2 year mark already. Neither line has had an iPhone on it ever, currently a BB and winMo phones. The last upgrade on Line two was actually a Nokia dumbphone is if that matters.

What I would like to do is get an iPhone 4 when it comes out with my Line 2 HUP, but use it on Line 1. Is this even possible? If so how do I do it? I don't mind adding data to Line 2. Will they let me use the Line 1 BB data value pack with the iPhone?

Is there a better way to go about it? Will I be able to do this sort of shuffle at the Apple Store, Over the phone or will I need to go into a Roger's store?

    Thanks for your advice.

Here's how I think it would work easiest. Someone correct me if this is wrong:

    1. Get a microsim for the line you want to use it on (December line). Probably would cost $10 like iPad microsim does. Rogers store guy said it's free.
    2. Get the iPhone on the eligible line from wherever you want, as you normally would.*
    3. First thing when you get it, even before activating, take out the microsim, so that the line you ordered it on does not get deactivated on the old sim.
    4. Put the purchased microsim in, activate, and use.
    5. Keep the microsim you took out (that came with the iPhone itself) in a safe place, so that you can keep using the upgrade line as usual.

    * If you get it from the Apple store you may have to stop the employee from activating it for you and give them the purchased microsim/explain your situation.

It makes sense to me, anyway.

You can't use a BB plan with an iPhone as the APN's are different and you will get nailed for data usage. But you can easily switch the BB plan to an iPhone plan at no charge, they just remove one and add the other - no big deal. Tell them you bought an iPhone to use instead of the Blackberry and they shouldn't have any issues.

As for activation issues, as far as I know, you just need to do like tsx11 said where you need to activate a new microsim on line 1 and remove the microsim that comes with the iPhone 4 and keep it safe so that line 2 remains activated on the old sim card without data.

Any decent CSR with a brain should be able to help you set it up, but watch out for the dullards who look at you funny when you talk about sim cards. I suggest going into a store where you can get it all done at once with one person and make sure it's done right.

Thanks for the input. I will give Rogers a shout once/go into a store when it is finally released and sort out the details!

My understanding, from what I've read on here, is that you CAN use the BB plan with the iPhone that you won't incur data charges. Has this changed?

Dude...welcome to two years ago. Geez. This was scare tactics that Rogers introduced, plain and simple.

I've been interchanging devices for years. no 'data usage charges' over my data plan.

    You're correct.

To answer OP: Yeah, it's a little tricky because of how Rogers (I'm reading) has set up the microsims.

To let you know, it's only partially relevant that you've never had an iPhone, because this device is the only device that has it's own set of peculiar eligibility policies. You could be early-eligible for any other smartphone...but if you had an iPhone last, you wouldn't be eligible for the iPhone. Some peculiar thing like that. I've experienced it. They were ready to offer me a BB 9700 for 3yr new price at far before eligibility, but in no way shape or form another iPhone lol.

What you'll need to accomplish (and it is possible, just involves a little back and forth on the reps part), is to cancel & credit the DECF of the data plan on L2 and adding it (with the 3yr term) on L1. Other than this (and properly setting up your new microsim for the iPhone), it's doable.

At the same time-keep in mind, that you can always call Rogers, explain what you want to do, and see if they'll make an exception of 4months and hup your L1 to avoid the hassle. Unlikely, but just might get lucky. There is a particular department that will tend to do this for you a lot more readily than regular Customer Service.

    Good Luck.
