I'm curious about this thread. Many posters are really jacked up about being able to get GSM service, probably from ATT, maybe from TMo. Yet in most parts of the country, the VZW network beats the pants off TMo and ATT, the latter usually bringing up the rear in most objective surveys.
Most of us use ST to be on the VZW network-- so why would you want to change? Yeah, I know, maybe you live in upper Bumflick North Dakota and VZW service is not too good there.
So if you want ATT, why didn't you go with them-- or one of the other MVNOs that use their network in the first place?
Or is is just fascination with change and something new?
Well first of all....I think most people can agree that the reason we switched to ST was because of the price and the fact that it is carried by one of the best providers. I have ALWAYS loved At&t but had no experience with Verizon. I did have At&t service but was paying a ridiculous amount for Gophone service ($60+ per month) which is why the "all you can eat plan" ($45/month) was very attractive.
Secondly, as I have stated before....I live in a metropolitan area in Florida, specifically the Tampa Bay area and Verizon's service here does not hold a light to At&t. With At&t I get 5 bars in my house and with Verizon I'm lucky if I get 3.
The ability to download apps and of course use a better browser like Opera mini along with longer battery life.

Not to quibble, but 3 out of 5 signal bars in your house, and that gives you qualms about a carrier?
I think other issues, like some thought ST would be eternally linked exclusively to VZW, and are they perhaps going to shift all new sign-ups eventually to some other carrier (GSM-based), may be on the minds of some.
i must say guys its a learning experience..i miss the qwerty pad the most..as u can see i cant spell it.this fone is soso..i can do alot more than i could with the t401g..i no now that the 401 does not dl bolt,opera.!. Curious minds want to know...
A few people manage to get better at&t coverage than VZW. It is NOT the norm.

Does that answer your question.........
Well no, not really, as another poster said, three bars is quite usable
And the signal strength readings you report at your house are inconsistent with results posted in the January 2010 Consumer Reports. Their data shows VZW signal strength as well above average in Tampa while ATT rates average-- ahead of Sprint and TMo.
Also, number of bars (signal strength) is only one dimension. Circuits full, dropped calls and static are also quite important.
Verizon is higher in most markets. If the SIM chip wasn't locked to the phone and you could stick it in a iPhone or Droid Nexus One, that would be the advantage to most. Since that's not the case, I don't see how this is necessarly better

LIES!
Facts are, life is better on the T-Mobile side
So you get an inferior technology for the same price?
GSM is not inferior.... it will still be easier to migrate to LTE and 4G from GSM vs CDMA (why do you think Verizon is moving towards SIM cards and a GSM-esque future?). Don't confuse the AT&Trash network with GSM. I agree that Verizon is better in the USA, but that shouldn't reflect bad on GSM/EDGE/WCDMA/HSPA+ system.
Unless I missed something, I don't think there's been any indication that ST is leaving VZW's network. Just adding AT&T's with separate phones. Until someone verifies otherwise...
