It will only play thru an attached headset, if it`s like other phones.

All true, except I believe the next version of Qualcomm CDMA (EV-DV?) would support simultaneous voice and data.

It's actually quite humorous how the GSM designers bashed CDMA for years before eventually acknowledging it as superior. Since I don't use data on my phone I'm still quite happy with the superior battery life of TDMA (old school TDMA and GSM).

Really? The sim is locked to a single phone?

That's lamer yet-it becomes just like Qualcom CDMA. And how many people would switch to this if you could use ANY GSM phone lol.

The SIM is very much like the one that ATT uses for its GoPhone service.

The GoPhone SIM automatically locks to the device in which it's activated, for a period of 6 months. (no idea about time, with the ST SIM) In the case of ATT, you can complain and they'll replace the SIM with a regular one that you can swap between devices.

    Carlos wouldn't approve.

hey @chuckknight in my experience the AT&T gophone sims and phones arent locked. i know the phones can be taken off the shelf and a postpaid sim inserted and they work and a friend uses his gophone sim in a variety of devices no problem.
now verizon prepaid phones on the other hand must be activated for 6 months before they can be used on regular service. ive been down that road.

so what i am saying is that the sim is not locked to a single phone from what we can tell.. its just locked to ST phones ( aka the LG or the sammy)

They started device locking the goPhone SIM about a year ago. You'll notice the new goPhone SIm is different from the old one...it automatically device locks to the handset in which it's activated for a period of 6 months. Happily, when it's "damaged," ATT will provide you with a replacement SIM from the normal ones.

I hooked a friend up with an iPhone and a prepaid (not goPhone) regular SIM.

Waaaaaait, is there some way to get an iPhone on a regular $60 Gophone plan just by buying a Gophone, activating (letting service run out), waiting 6 months and then putting the SIM in an iPhone? Except the new iPhone uses some smaller SIM anyway, so...

Officially, no. Just like Carlos, ATT would never approve.

    Yes, of course there is.

Is it as simple as that? Just activating a Go phone, waiting 6 months, and popping it in an iPhone? I suppose I should ask over in AT&T land, sorry :-D Data's nice, but I could live without it if I could just get the phone on a semi-reasonable price (Hmm...although come to think of it it wouldn't really be much different in price for me, I'd just be trading 2GB data for unlimited voice which 98% of the time I don't need)

There's a bit more to it than that...but not too much. Shoot me a PM and we can discuss the details.

There's no waiting six months. Just go to an at&t store and ask them for a regular SIM the day you sign up. They will give it to you for free, and it won't be locked.
