My antenna is smaller than yours
I currently have nextel and want to sign up for the sprint employee referral plan. Since I'm not considered a new customer, if I get somebody who doesn't have Sprint to sign up for the plan, could I then transfer it into my name and transfer my number to that account?
For example, if I could get a friend to sign up for the plan, could we call and do a change of ownership for the account and switch it over to me? I'm out of contract right now, so I think I could just cancel my old account or port my number out to a temporary pre-paid phone, then port it back, right?

Why not sign up for an EPRP plan with Sprint... then port your Nextel number out to a prepaid (no ETF if you're out-of-contract)... then port it back into your EPRP plan? Could you walk me through it then? I signed up for a new account and got a call from sprint a couple of hours later saying that they were canceling my order because I already have an account. I asked to be put on the plan that I had ordered and they said all they have is the $69.99 plan.

The best thing to do is call Sprint CS and get someone knowledgeable about the EPRP plan to help you (you may need to be transferred to a special department that handles EPRP calls). Someone on this forum posted the T&C for EPRP and it states that NEW plans/lines could be EPRP for existing customers.
Worse comes to worse, have your friend and family member call and sign up for a plan, then add you as an add-a-line. That (your original plan) would work too...

I've seen the direct telephone number to EPRP posted here before... maybe a search would find it...

I've called them... I spoke to a girl who said "yea, I can get you transferred over to this plan. What phone would you like?" I told her which phone I wanted, she put in the order, then promptly transferred me to cancellations. I called the number back and was told that it's not possible for existing customers to get on that plan.

I am pretty sure you can not be an existing sprint/nextel customer. If you are out of contract port your number over to a prepaid. wait a couple of days foreverything to take affect. once your out of the Sprint system go to the EPRP website and try it then. At that point you are not an existing customer and you "should" be able to sign up for the the EPRP plan. Youwould not have to call anyone and it is all done online.
I have not personally done this but have read several other threads where it has been done and worked with no problems.

For existing customers, you CANNOT be transferred to this plan (that I know of). My suggestion is to:
1) Open a NEW EPRP plan (that you want to eventually end up with) making the CSR think you're bringing over new people to Sprint.
2) Port the old numbers (you want to keep) to prepaid phones... hopefully your old lines are out-of-contract otherwise you'll end up paying ETF's.
3) After a few days, call Sprint CSR back again and tell them you have some numbers you want to port into your NEW EPRP plan.
There should be no problem with doing this (or so people post). If you really don't care about your old numbers, then you can skip steps #2 & #3 and just cancel your non-EPRP plan on your 2nd phone call.

The problem you ran into is that you're trying to sign up for a new account with sprint, instead of adding your order to your existing Sprint account. when you sign up for sprint they do a credit check to determine how many lines you're eligible for and how much if any your monthly limit on services will be, and give you an account which all your services are placed under. if you're within your line and service limit then you can sign up for a new line under any plan you want and add all the services you want, just make sure to specify your existing account number (separate from your existing phone number/plan).
if you want to keep your existing phone number, because sprint won't convert existing lines to EPRP, and I heard they also won't swap/port numbers between sprint phones, you'll probably need to buy a prepaid and port your number elsewhere, and then port it back to the new line with sprint you order. in the case they do swap numbers then you'll need to have the new line running and ask them to change the numbers between the two devices.
the other thing is sprint might only approve you to have a single line at a time, or a spending limit of $80 (it varies) and in this case you'll need to port your number and cancel all existing service before being allowed to sign up for more services, and you'll still need to specify your existing Sprint account number during the sign up process (make sure they know to leave your account open after you cancel service).
does this sort of make sense cause I'm a little overwhelmed by external forces atm, but what you're doing is definitely possible as long as you place the order right using your existing account. :B
:EDIT now customer service might be clueless or something, so might forum posters, but if you can't get anywhere just do the following:
1. Buy a prepaid phone, and have your current Sprint number ported to it.
2. Call Sprint and take care of your account, usually when you port a number your lines of service are automatically canceled (so i hear) but besides having services canceled, you want to get your account number and make sure it remains active. Don't bother customer service with the details other than you need the account to remain active so you can sign up for more/new services on the website.
3. Goto sprint.com/everythingplus , pick your plan and phone, and choose the option to use your existing account, entering it as provided in step 2.
4. There's an option to choose your phone number on the website during sign up (by porting, etc). Either use that to port the number from the prepaid, or let the system choose for you and port later.
5. Assuming you don't get caught up in clueless CS dogma, success! You can also sign up for service over the phone but you MUST find specially trained and EPRP aware agents to take care of all of it for you, the number is usually: 888-882-4030

'm not quite sure how this works...so what is efrp exactly? I've never had a phone or plan with sprint but I see this being mentioned EVERYWHERE...I get 25% off from my company, is this efrp thing cheaper?

Why don't you just get on the student rate plan? Existing customers can get that, and it's a better deal anyway.

Student rate plan? What exactly does it entail? I'm looking to get a smartphone ala the evo or epic 4g depending on how it plays out..does it add more than a 25% discount?

EPRP is NOT better than a 25% discount. (e.g. the ED 450 $70 plan is $60 on EPRP) -- and EPRP plans are non-discountable. Also you are not supposed to be able to switch to EPRP as an existing customer UNLESS you are switching from SERO.

No it won't be better than 25%, but it's better than the EPRP.
