I think it was said before that some stores try to limit the amount of phones they sell at full retail, since the reps only make a commission on renewing contracts, but if you go in there to buy it at full retail without a contract renew, they should still sell it to you. I'm not sure who would pay $699 for BestBuy full retail since Verizon is $569.
I am actually going to call Verizon about this, as I think I should not have had to wait only to be told that they were just selling phones with a 2 year agreement, and referring everyone else to buy online. Best Buy also does price matching, so that is also an option for those that choose Best Buy for buying the phone. They price matched me once on full retail already.

Reason: grammar error
I've ordered the phone, but I have one question. In Gizmodo's review (http://gizmodo.com/5587225/motorola-...yline=true&s=i) they really blast motorola's software running on top of android. When the X is finally ready for 2.2, will there be an option to upgrade to plain, vanilla, 2.2, or will you be stuck with 2.2 w/ Moto's overlaying software? I'm so ready to get rid of my env touch.
You'll be stuck with whatever software Moto and VZW put in the firmware.
Because of the locked/encrypted boot loader, and its protection, there likely wont be any alternate firmwares/roms available (unless they find away around that encryption/lock/efuse)
I ordered mine online yesterday pretty much the instant it became available in the store. My order status says the following (and has said so since I ordered it), which doesn't sound great:
Order Date: 07/15/2010
Order Number: XXXXXXXX
Order Status: Your order is currently being processed. Please check back tomorrow.

It will be modded. Also it looks like that efuse was on the droid
You guys got your phones today, you unwrapped them delicately, probobly turned them on, activated them...now your wondering...whats next?
Early this morning, i had the droidmod team look at somethings
guess what? the security on the droidx is most likely the exact same as the milestone. Thats right, so if we completely hack the droidx, the milestone will more than likely fall as well.
First we need root, then we need to figure out this boot loader business.
But wait! Birdman! what about the efuse?! Guess what? google "omap3 efuse"
Droid, Milestone, DroidX, Droid2...all these phones have efuse...they just really haven't been put into use...
Will your DroidX explode from unauthorized tinkering? probably not. (but wait for someone else to try it first if your scared of the big bad efuse )
Right, but he also posts that its likely the same as the Milestone which has been rooted, but has yet to have the boot loader cracked so they can install custom roms.
With the milestone being out for about 7 months now, and only been rooted, its a question of WHEN will they get around that boot loader stuff? only after that will you see any custom roms.
I guess I'll just be happy as long as 2.2 gets out when VZW/Moto has said it will. Even with Moto's tinkering, it still should basically destroy (in terms of computing power) everything out there, no?

I'm in the same boat as you, ordered the second I could last night and still "processing", and I called CS. They stated they are inundated with orders and she would NOT guarantee that my order would be processed today before 4:30 PM, but said that in all likelihood it would be.
Looks like mine is running .516 as well. OTA update says phone is up to date.
The sales reps at the store I went to were nice enough to put the UPC and the rebate form in an already addressed envelope. All I have to do is put a stamp on it and send it out.
Everytime you don't read the thread before asking your silly question, Verizon delays a new cellphone. Yes, Verizon did just robbed you.
HAHAHAHA! yeah I'm laughing at you!
I got to Verizon at 7:30 this morning and there was about 40 people in line! They took our names and showed us the phone and offered coffee and doughnuts. I was all set to pay full retail when (the hottest cs rep ever ) said well looks like its going to let you upgrade! I was like what!!!!! My up grade was still 7 monthes away! So I got the phone, dock, leather pouch and hdmi cable and a gel case for my wifes tour for $429.00 out the door!! Im so pleased! lol I was there for about 30 mins total and as I was leaving there were still about 60 people in the store! On a side note there was people of all ages getting the X today and I think thats pretty awesome! Mine is also running .516
Showed up at my local store this morning at about 8:45 for a 9am opening. There was already a line of 15 or so people, and I was the 16th. Our store reportedly got 80 phones, so I probably could have left and come back at a later, less busy time to get one, but I figured I might as well hang out since I was already there. There was a list going around, and up until the actual ordering happened, I think they handled it rather well.
But then I waited for over an hour and a half to get my Droid X because it seemed like EVERY single person had 1,0000 questions about it's basic functions and instead of politely and quickly informing the customers, the salespeople kept messing around with the phones and being exceptionally slow. They also kept leaving their computers and dissappearing for awhile (not to the back to get more phone or accessories stock) leaving customers hanging at the registers and one less sales rep to move things along. I finally got to order mine, and was out of there in about 10 minutes. I just wish the 15 people before me could have done the same.
But, the good part of the story is that they gave me the early upgrade without any extra fees without any trouble, and I was also offered an instant rebate in the store, which I was not expecting. I picked up a dock and case as well, and both were heavily discounted due to my corp. discount.
So, all in all, a success, but I wouldn't want to wait in line like that again, and wish I could have just ordered online instead.
Now that I have the Droid X...I'm not in love. It's VERY big and I have tiny girl hands (XS sized women's glove, ring size 4 and that's too big, etc.) I knew this going into it, but I think trying to reach the upper right corner with my thumb and fumbling the phone before giving up and using two hands is going to get old. Also, the stock android interface + "not quite Blur" widgets are pretty ugly in person, and lack the flash of Sense UI. Also, why the heck does the keyboard have an entire key dedicated to a smiley face? That's pretty stupid. Call quality seems good so far, but call volume is low, and I've had my phone hang on Navigation to the point where I had to restart already.
So I'm not sure I'll be keeping mine, and might be "downgrading" to an Incredible within my 30 days. Shame, as I love Motorola build quality and reception, but this one just might not be for me. I'll give it a shot though, since I haven't really had a lot of time to play with it since I raced back to work.
They had two display X phones at the store. I tried one. The display seemed brighter than my Droid, when both were on autobrightness. Any comments on that FAUguy and others? The phone seemed responsive enough, with lots of apps I did not recognize. I had problems using the keyboard in portrait.
