I definitely don't think either is overrated, rooting especially. If you're an advanced user then rooting is necessary imo. As for overclocking, when you go from 550mhz to 1.25ghz there's actually a big difference in performance. I can notice a big difference. Just my .02

Besides why OC a phone? So that you can get an extra frame while playing a game, or have the screen load 0.5 seconds faster?
You don't know that at all. The only information we have on the Droid X's overclockability is by looking at the TI OMAP chipset in the Droid 1 - which overclocked beautifully. What goes to say that the X won't handle overclocking just as elegantly?

I keep phones for two years. I cannot afford to upgrade between NE2 or anything like that. The thing that makes overclocking worth it to me is that it can easily prevent your phone from being obsolete, as you can always speed up your phone to run newer and more intensive apps, though there's a limit. The other thing that's extremely relevant about moddibility is upgradability. There's a good chance that we'll see 3.0 on the Droid 1 even if Motorola doesn't push it through. This extends the life of the phone, as it receives updates well into it's dying days.

I'm holding off for the Droid 2 in hope of an unlocked bootloader. Motorola said that keeping the Droid 1 bootloader open was an exception, a 'business decision.' Let's hope they continue this business decision with the Droid 2. If not, I'll probably have to look for another manufacturer. I'd looked forward to having a Motorola phone because they seem to have (at least) a slight leg-up in build quality over HTC.

The main reason that I said that is because of diminishing returns. Going form 1GHz to 1.5 GHz (Assuming that is possible) won't feel as fast as clocking the Droid's 500Mz or so to 1 GHz. Same reasoning behind adding more horespower to a car, only for it to barely go any faster, despite a noticeable hortsepower increase.

Ah, I see. That is honestly an extremely valid point.

I do feel that overclocking extends the usable life of the phone (while most likely killing the processor slowly :-p)

To be honest, I'm not a fan of snapdragon chips. I'd rather have TI OMAP.
