I believe firmwares don't upgrade based on the version number, but rather by release date. I may be wrong, but 12.2 cannot upgrade to 12.8 I know that one for a fact. Note that 12.2 was released after 12.8

As for testing, I wish I hadn't already boxed up my old phone, i'd have tested it. Though JAF doesn't like my phone, or simply doesnt like windows 7... and for some reason my dual boot won't work(need to troubleshoot that a lil, worked last time I installed tinyxp... will try that tomorrow after work and see if it can do anything, tho last time I messed with JAF on this phone(just reading values) it killed my net somehow... Took 2 hard resets to get it working again(tried the 2nd hard reset while the new phone was on its way)...

    Edit:

Included in my email to Nokia: The camera has no auto-focus. I have to be nearly a foot away from anything to get a clear picture. Makes it great for scenery pictures, but for anything up close it is nearly useless. Other than that, I personally like the camera app the way it is. Oh, except for the few and annoyingly loud camera tones. I know you are trying to keep people safe from secret pictures, but really? Luckily I found where the tones are stored, and plan on swapping one for my own(the 4 options are all rather annoying honestly, the only one I use atm is the loud beep)
*luckily they don't know anything about my device itself, so cannot void my warranty for admitting I have hacked it lol*

    @Scottish Skyedance-
I noticed you got NSS to work in another thread to change the product code. I know for a fact it doesn't work properly in Windows 7, once I get the boot issue resolved, I was wondering if you would know the following:
Even though firmware downgrading is said to be buggy for Nokias, what do you think the chances are of changing the prod code then updating to the unbranded fw?
If its more likely that the JAF tutorial will work, I will try it in tinyxp tomorrow and hope it doesnt do any damage to my phone

Wirelessly posted (HTC Nexus One: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Nexus One Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

I think I have to assign a "beatup" computer (no anti-virus installed) which will not be used for regular work to install and run JAF because it will make some money for the college if I successfully to add Chinese and Arabic support on US machine.

I really wish I had a working backup phone. Have a Razr but the usb port is loose and wont charge(what I like about nokia separating them). If you get a chance, can you try changing the prod code to the 12.8 firmware for me? I really like having contacts on my home screen, but SPB MobileShell is a batteryhog(tho it is very attractive and probably what nokia should model their homescreens around, it is amazing lol)

Rather than buy or put together a whole new computer maybe you could run the programs inside a virtual machine if you're worried about them?

An update: I'm frustrated enough with the buggy-ness of the 5230 on 11.8.whatever to flash it to that custom firmware I was talking about. I did an experiment with an old 5610 that was having some reboot loop problems and I've learned some things.

    1) JAF doesn't care about product codes. It will apparently let you flash your phone with whatever firmware you care to use. This is both good and bad, depending on your confidence/experience with phone flashing.

    2) Nokia doesn't play by its own RM-XXX "rules" so we don't have to either (hopefully?). The latest official firmware I found for the 5610 even breaks these rules.

First I should explain the way Nokia FW works, or at least the way that JAF works. This is the video that helped me understand and followed for flashing the 5610. There are three main files needed to flash a Nokia, apparently. In JAF these are represented by the buttons: MCU, PPM and CNT. (There is another button named APE Variant that I don't fully understand yet. User settings? This may correspond to the UDA file which can be used in flashing a 5230.) For a manual flash, which seems to me to be more foolproof than an auto flash, you tell JAF specifically which "button" or category should match to which file. (Auto would mean checking the "use INI" box, as I understand it, and JAF would chose the files based upon the filename. Seemed risky to me.)

MCU, PPM and CNT seem to be generic terms, so the files are not going to be standard and will vary depending on the type of phone and version of Symbian. But CNT seems to be the "custom" area of the FW while MCU and PPM are the system layers. (I think.) For the 5610, MCU and PPM refer fairly obviously to the firmware files whose extensions which contain those names. The CNT is a little less obvious, in the case of the 5610 it refers to the .image file. [For the 5230, CNT refers to the .ROFS3 file, while MCU is the .C0x file and PPM is the .ROFS2 file.] (I ignored all other files that downloaded with these in Navifirm.)

In the case of the 5610, I downloaded the newest (8.23) FW in Navifirm for the RM-359 (the proper RM code). Even though I could have chosen a T-Mobile variant/product code, I went with a more generic-sounding version and chose one that contained the label EURO-A for English. I basically paid no attention to product codes. The rule-breaking part: Even in the official non-custom Nokia FW, the RM-359 download contains MCU and PPM files labeled RM-358. The CNT was the only main file to be labeled RM-359. This made me more confident to attempt the next part:

Following another post on this forum (in the main Nokia section, I think). I got a little crazy and decided to use the CNT/.image file from yet another RM version, RM-242, since RM-242's FW was 10.0 while the RM-359 was only 8.23.

Flashing: In JAF, I chose the offical RM-359 MCU and PPM files (which are confusingly named RM-358, remember) and then used the CNT/.image file from the RM-242 download. I did not rename these files to match each other at all.

I followed the basic instructions from the above YouTube video. Although, I realized after JAF couldn't find my phone, that you have to plug your phone (turned on) into your computer at least once before running JAF so that Windows will auto-load a driver and "pair" with your phone. You also need the Nokia OVI software installed before all this, I think.

It took about 5 minutes but the 5610 rebooted into an unbranded 8.23 firmware with a 10.0 "theme" file on top of it. I haven't put a SIM card into the phone yet and I don't know if this actually fixed the rebooting problem it was having but this was a great trial run for the 5230, since I will be doing almost the exact same thing: installing the latest official Cincinnati Bell 20.whatever MCU and PPM files into the phone with a custom CNT file (and possibly a custom UDA file, once I figure out exactly what that is).

I will start a separate thread once I successfully flash my 5230.

If you would link, or even post the steps in here, I would be grateful. Looking to flash my 5230(the 12.2 fixed most of my complaints with the 5230, but still would prefer an unbranded firmware) I cannot remember the website, but there is a CFW for the Euro 5230. As long as it doesn't flash the part that allows me to connect to USA Bands, I would love to try it out... I'll look for a link and let you decide if you want to try it(may be the one linked by someone else in this post, but I'll have to check)

I'm done with this stupid phone switching to edge. Whenever it switches, it refuses to send/receive any data until going back to 3G... Testing that CFW.

i hope the 12.2.082 will have a debrand soon, i bought mine from costco and when i cheked it was already updated out of the box, im having problems with the 3g and ovi maps using it in asia so i really need to debrand, i believe debranding it and forcing 3g will solve my problems in the Network Mode option

I have successfully flashed the RM-588 rofs3 to my phone. I will edit this post with any updates, make sure everything works properly. Once I confirm its all good, I'll add a post with steps of installing the cfw. (note: I had to use Windows XP to run JAF and have everything work properly. In win7 it was unable to detect the phone booting up, thanks to windows automatic driver installer)
    ---
Update: My biggest concern has been addressed. 3G still works fine.
    ---
I may be editing the CFW to add the Camera Mod, to hopefully silence the annoying tone. Until then I dont plan on really doing much as far as customization goes
    ---
    Edited, mod didnt work, sadly.
    ----
'Themes' isn't working, whenever I go to themes it tries to open, then closes... May be a deal breaker unless I can lock 3G.
    ----
3G locked... I can live with this light theme I guess.
    ---
Ok, tonight I'm going to download the rofs3 that this is based on and flash it to my phone. If the themes and all that work right, I will be making a CFW based on it. Flashing back to the stock FW first, and i'm going to try to get the t-mobile "my account" app extracted and make a sis installer for anyone that uses tmo and wants that, but also wants a cfw. Will be adding certain mods from dailymobile.se's list of v5 mods.
I am a beginner on cooking fw(I know enough to know how to do it now, but not enough to do much more than what is available on the list of mods for cfw). If anyone wants to improve upon what I start, feel free to do so.. I dont even care about getting credit for it, I just want a decent fw on my phone

Well, since there are so many(dozens at least) variants of the fw version the xtension was based on, I used the current tmo firmware. Some of the mods caused bugs(five homescreens was really 3, and unable to remove the soft keys on the bottom that are only active in 2 of the three). 3 more homescreen buttons mod just added nokia's app manager, dialer, and settings below the phonebook/dialer so it was rather useless. Sensor mod screwed up the sensors completely, had no area in settings and had no turning control.

I ended up using the Application Policy Mod(Allows unsigned installations even before rompatcher), RAM Cache Change mod(moves RAM cache to C), and UI Acceleration. I also had to edit a few files(in the end, I figured it was even simpler than I expected) to mute the Camera on tone1, and mute the recording sound. Since the files relating to the camera are not in the ROM, it requires a CFW-level solution.

If someone wants to find out exactly what variant the Xtension cfw was based on, I'll look into adding these changes(along with the tmo night theme) to that version, as it has the ability to lock 3G. Everything but the Themes area(and a few buggy things with the homescreen) worked with Xtension so if the base fw doesnt have the theme issue, I will be able to create a very simplistic cfw for people to go over to for the 3G locking(and camera muting).. Those are really my biggest issues with the phone, I can live with the rest, so anyone who wants improvements can add to it with what they would like to see changed on the 5230.

XTension^10 CFW ported to RM-593(since the one for RM-588 didn't seem to work as rofs3, I had move stuff into the rofs2).

Note: You may need to use NFE 0.2 to edit your own rofs2 if you want any language other than english. The rofs2 is only within the filesize limit when you have one language installed with this cfw on rm593

Includes the link to the files I used

Updated! I have ported all of the XTEnsion's CFW to RM-593, now you don't need to manually put all the rofs3 stuff into rofs 2. just download the appropriate variant and language here: http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.ph...6981#msg346981
